- Meeting Overview:
During a recent Cedar Grove School Board meeting, members engaged in a debate over the implementation of a new math program, a topic that took precedence in the discussion and captured the attention of those present. The conversation centered on how the introduction of the new math series from kindergarten through fourth grade would impact student learning and transition to middle school. Concerns were raised regarding the potential gap this program might create and the challenges students could face due to inconsistencies in the curriculum.
An issue of particular interest was the discussion about the grade levels at which the new math series should start. While one member underscored the need for consistency in language and skills across grade levels, another member voiced concern about beginning the program at the kindergarten level. The debate extended to the potential confusion for students who might not be exposed to the language of the new program early enough.
The math program’s introduction also brought up questions about the professional development needed for its successful implementation. The board discussed the importance of ensuring teachers were adequately trained to utilize the new curriculum effectively.
In addition to the math program, the meeting addressed the non-tenured status of Christine Palamara, a staff member at Cedar Grove High School. Palamara made a public comment voicing her concerns regarding her job security amid a potential reduction in force. She sought documentation to reflect this change and highlighted her commitment to teaching and her strive for excellence. The board members responded to Palamara’s concerns and provided assurances that they would follow up on the issue.
Board members expressed their optimism about the district’s future and the importance of relationship-building between staff, the community, and district leadership.
The meeting also covered committee reports, which included achievements such as the Middle School FSA and leadership transition. Moreover, the board moved through other agenda items, including motions for resolutions under the business administrator’s report and human resources.
While the student representative’s report touched on student life events such as upcoming ceremonies, student council elections, senior sunset, and prom, decision day was also mentioned, with the student representative announcing her decision to attend Notre Dame.
The North End and South End schools’ presentations were focused on mathematics and ELA proficiency goals, along with community engagement activities. These presentations highlighted initiatives aimed at supporting student achievements such as targeted small group instruction, multi-tiered systems of supports, after-school tutoring, and professional development for teachers. Community engagement efforts were also emphasized, including family volunteer opportunities, social media connections, special events, ongoing teacher-parent communication, and resources available through the school website.
Moreover, the school climate team’s efforts to promote a positive school climate and engage stakeholders were noted, featuring activities designed to engage students and parents, such as open house events, parent conferences, concerts, field days, and Media Center activities.
