Cedar Grove Honors Local Heroes and Addresses Key Budget and Housing Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
At the Cedar Grove Town Council meeting, local heroes were honored, budget ordinances were adopted, and essential measures for affordable housing compliance were advanced. The council recognized the Cedar Grove High School robotics team for their national success, commended two police officers for life-saving actions, and approved financial measures to ensure the township meets its fiscal and housing obligations.
The meeting began with a notable tribute to the Cedar Grove High School robotics team, which recently achieved a remarkable victory at a VEX robotics competition in Cleveland, Ohio. Competing against 60 teams from the United States and Canada, the team secured the Innovate Award, propelling them closer to the prestigious VEX Robotics World Championship set for April 2026 in Missouri. The mayor honored the team’s accomplishments with a proclamation that emphasized their dedication, creativity, and teamwork. A coach highlighted the team’s current global ranking of 12th. The recognition extended to the team’s coaches, who were commended for their mentorship and support.
In another act of commendation, Officers John Miguelki and Steven Smeigielski were recognized for their life-saving actions. On June 9, 2025, the officers responded to a call where a resident experienced a seizure and lost her pulse. The officers’ prompt response and effective use of CPR and a defibrillator revived the individual, likely preventing a family tragedy. The mayor and Chief Pumprey praised the officers for their bravery and skill, declaring them the “pride of the township.” A family member of the rescued individual expressed gratitude.
The meeting also addressed significant fiscal measures, including the adoption of ordinance number 26-962, allowing the township to exceed the municipal budget appropriation limits. This ordinance permits an increase of up to 3.5% of fiscal year 2025’s appropriations, providing an additional $245,742.49 in funding. The council unanimously approved this ordinance. Additionally, the council authorized a resolution awarding a bid for solid waste and recycling services to F. Basso Jr. for Rubbish Removal Inc., amounting to $4,192,500 over five years.
The council also focused on affordable housing initiatives, introducing three interrelated ordinances to meet legal obligations by a March 15 deadline. Ordinance 9F aims to overhaul Chapter 80, outlining affordable housing regulations, while 9G seeks to add vacant properties to an overlay zone to facilitate inclusionary development. Ordinance 9H addresses development fees, aligning them with current requirements. These measures are vital for securing a judgment of repose from the court.
Amidst these developments, the council recognized the efforts of the Department of Public Works (DPW) in addressing recent weather challenges and water main breaks. The council lauded the DPW, police, firefighters, and ambulance personnel for their dedication, particularly during challenging conditions. The council also noted an increase in health insurance costs impacting municipalities.
In other business, the council approved a resolution for the demolition and reconstruction of a playground at Community Park, supported by a $750,000 NJD grant. The project aims for completion by Memorial Day, with the township contributing $168,222.34. The council also addressed upcoming polling changes, informing residents about new voting locations for specific districts and urging them to verify their polling places.
The meeting concluded with the introduction of several ordinances related to utility charges and land use. Both ordinances received unanimous approval, reflecting proactive fiscal management.
