- Meeting Overview:
The Chatham Historical Commission, in a recent meeting, ruled that the property on Morris Island Road is not historically significant, thereby not imposing a demolition delay for proposed alterations. This decision came after the commission’s examination of the property and discussions regarding its age and historical relevance.
The property in question, constructed in 1978, does not meet any of the definitional criteria of historical significance as per the local bylaw. A representative from deRuyter Dunham Builders presented plans for renovations that include doors and second-floor work, emphasizing that the property’s footprint would remain unchanged. After a site visit and discussion, a motion was made by a commission member to acknowledge the property did not meet the historical significance criteria and should not be subjected to a demolition delay. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved by roll call vote, with all present commission members in agreement.
During the meeting, other topics were addressed, including an update on the Nickerson Homestead status. The commission is moving forward with an application to Massachusetts Historical Commission for the eligibility of the Nickerson family dig as a National Register site. Additionally, the status of the US Coast Guard Boat House was discussed, with a mention of an upcoming town meeting warrant that could impact the project.
The commission also discussed the Preservation Awards Committee, which has sent out selections and is preparing for a presentation event on May 18th. Members were encouraged to join the committee for future events.
Lastly, there was mention of the upcoming History Weekend, scheduled for June 14th to 16th, which is designed to promote Chatham’s historic venues. The weekend will include an array of activities and presentations, including results from archaeological work on local cemeteries by Dan Zoto and Holly Herbster.
