- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Chatham Historical Commission meeting, members grappled with a key decision regarding the renovation of a historic property on Old Stage Harbor Road. The primary focus was on the owners’ proposal to remove two deteriorating chimneys and replace them with faux alternatives, sparking a discussion about preserving the architectural integrity of the home while accommodating modern safety and usability requirements.
The home, known as the Captain Daniel house, holds historical significance due to its age and association with past residents. They argued that the chimneys, now structurally unsound, were not visible from the street and had been deemed historically insignificant. Despite this, some commission members emphasized the chimneys as key character-defining elements and advocated for their preservation.
The commission discussed various options, such as repairing the existing chimneys or installing faux replacements, to retain the home’s historical appearance. A sentiment emerged among several members that preserving at least one faux chimney could satisfy both the owners’ desires and the commission’s preservation goals. Additionally, the possibility of salvaging bricks from the existing chimneys to prevent waste and contribute to other projects was considered.
The issue of replacing the front doors with modern alternatives also came under scrutiny. The owners proposed using doors from Thermo Tru’s Classic Craft series, which align with American craftsmen styles and are found in other historical homes in the area. The commission debated the inclusion of sidelights in the new design, with one member expressing admiration for the existing doors as “really beautiful old historic doors.”
Public comments during the meeting included a letter from a neighbor, Mr. Potter, who supported the homeowners’ efforts to preserve the historic home and advocated for the removal of the non-functional chimneys. Similarly, residents Anne Timson and Stephen Clark voiced support for the renovation project, noting that the chimneys were not original to the structure and raising concerns about the practicality of faux replacements.
In addition to the discussion on Old Stage Harbor Road, the commission addressed proposed work at a property on Mistover Lane. The owners plan to undertake foundational work while maintaining the exterior structure intact. The commission members expressed strong support for this project, acknowledging its importance in preserving a historic house that has been part of the community for many years.
The meeting also covered updates on various ongoing projects and initiatives. This included a planned archaeological survey of the Nickerson Homestead site and discussions with Christine Christino, the new town planner, on potential punitive measures related to preservation efforts. The commission also briefly touched on the archaeological sensitivity of areas within Chatham, particularly concerning the Zero Cross Wind Farm project, and considered the potential for adopting an archaeological-oriented bylaw to safeguard sensitive areas.
