- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Chatham School Board, Sally Allen was appointed to fill the open board position, and the board tackled a series of updates and community concerns. Among the covered topics were the implementation of revised K-5 report cards, an increase in subscription bus fees, and progress on Chatham High School field improvements. Additionally, the board discussed changes to the State graduation assessment calendar, updates on anti-bullying measures, and the success of Chatham students in the New Jersey Physics Olympics. Community engagement was evident during the public commentary sections, where residents inquired about various district operations and decision-making processes.
The appointment of Sally Allen followed the unanimous vote and recommendation of the committee, filling the vacancy left by Miss Clark. Subsequently, Allen was sworn in as the newest board member, ready to contribute to the governance of the district.
During the meeting, the board delved into substantial educational changes, such as the upcoming revisions to K-5 report cards. These changes, to be implemented in the 2024 school year, stem from shifts in math and English Language Arts (ELA) standards, with an emphasis on foundational skills and phonics. The Math and ELA supervisors are tasked with developing the revisions, with an initial draft expected by May or June. Information sessions are planned for the fall to familiarize parents with the new report card format.
In financial matters, the board discussed an increase in subscription bus fees for the 2024-2025 school year, moving from $730 to $800. This adjustment was part of a broader conversation on school funding, which included the Rock Grant and capital spending, as well as tuition rates for 4-day kindergarten. The board also contemplated policy updates concerning facility use fees and the criteria for awarding Varsity letters, promising updates to be posted on the district’s website.
A key infrastructure update came from the construction committee, which reported on ongoing security vestibule installations and roof projects.
The personnel committee brought up contract negotiations and support for paraprofessionals, while the curriculum committee discussed necessary textbook purchases for Advanced Placement classes and reconfiguration plans. Visits to other districts are being conducted to benchmark and improve Chatham’s educational offerings. In a related note, the curriculum committee reported an uptick in second-grade parent interest in Lafayette attendance, nearing the target number of 80 students.
During the public commentary sections, the board’s transparency and communication were central themes. Community member Libby Hils inquired about the dissemination of meeting minutes and the advertisement process for the open board position. In response to questions raised, the board president assured that efforts would be made to address questions during the meeting when possible.
Bill Heap, another community member, commended the Chatham Education Foundation for its 30 years of educational support. The Chatham Education Association also used the public commentary to express gratitude for grant-supported events and to recognize the dedicated work of school maintainers and custodians.
The meeting further explored liaison reports, which included the Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce and the Chatham Education Foundation’s anniversary. The board underscored the importance of community partnerships and the impact of grant funding on various student activities.
Addressing the board business, the members discussed logistical aspects such as meeting locations and scheduling conflicts. The second public commentary session provided a platform for further community interaction, with Miss Hills and another individual, W, raising financial concerns related to behaviorist training and lawsuit expenditures. Responses from Superintendent Michael LaSusa and Dr. Emily Sortino emphasized the importance of confidentiality and the value of Crisis Prevention Institute training.
