Chatham Township Acquires Fensky Property for Open Space
- Meeting Overview:
The Chatham Township Council announced the acquisition of the 17-acre Fensky property, a notable move for open space preservation and potential recreational use, at their meeting on June 25th, 2024. The meeting also recognized Jessica Romeo with a Citizenship Award for her community contributions, discussed public safety capital plan ordinances, and addressed residents’ concerns about the Font Avenue improvements project.
The purchase of the Fensky property by the township was a notable item of discussion.
Jessica Romeo received the Citizenship Award for her extensive work with the Environmental Commission, Scouts, and several community initiatives. Her dedication to sustainability, social justice, and community engagement was celebrated by council members and residents.
The council addressed the Font Avenue improvements project, emphasizing its adherence to ADA compliance and pedestrian safety standards. The project had undergone a public approval process, during which concerns were raised by residents. The council’s response to these concerns highlighted the transparent and participatory nature of the township’s decision-making process.
The Environmental Commission’s chair presented an overview of the commission’s activities, including community education, outreach, yard sales, native plant sales, and participation in the township Fall Festival. Grants received for a reforestation project and the commission’s focus on climate change were notable points of discussion. The council acknowledged the commission’s contributions, particularly in providing valuable input and advice.
Updates on utilities were provided, covering water main improvements, natural gas rate changes, and a potential rate increase by JCPNL. The council also reported on recent and upcoming recreation events, such as swim meets, field hockey camps, and open registration for fall sports. Developments in open space preservation and potential lighting upgrades for a local field were mentioned.
The Board of Education’s security measures, school calendar, and a potential collaboration with Harding students were addressed. Weather patterns’ impact on the community, volunteerism opportunities, and legal actions against social media companies for mental health issues among teens were also discussed.
The council heard from community members Mike Martin and Ben Bernich about a Bocce Court proposal. Martin provided an itemized budget and discussed the need for a location, while Bernich emphasized the project’s importance for fulfilling his Eagle Scout requirements. An update on the review process for the proposal was provided by the administrator.
Several ordinances were adopted, including those pertaining to permit and peddler license fees, pool license fees, and other matters. A public hearing for ordinance 2024-14 revealed differing views among the council regarding the use of debt for specific expenses. One council member opposed the ordinance due to concerns about increasing debt, while another supported it, emphasizing the need for public safety funding. The ordinance was ultimately passed following the hearing.
The adoption of the budget was a significant topic, with discussions on the use of debt for Public Safety purchases. The Reserve for Uncollected Taxes (RUT) was debated as a budget management tool, while the introduction of a new ordinance for a historic preservation easement was also discussed and approved. A resident proposed considering a custom remount for fire trucks as a cost-saving measure, leading to a discussion on the need for fully specified and priced trucks and the securing of grants for essential equipment.
