Chelmsford Hosts Textile Recycling Event to Support Hoarding Disorder Network
- Meeting Overview:
Chelmsford’s Select Board meeting highlighted the town’s efforts to support individuals dealing with hoarding disorder through an upcoming textile recycling and paper shredding event. Scheduled for May 2nd, the event aims to provide a decluttering opportunity for residents of Chelmsford and neighboring towns, while also raising funds for the Middlesex Hoarding Disorder Resource Network.
The event, initiated by the Chelmsford Senior Center and the Board of Health, represents a collaborative effort to address the challenges faced by individuals with hoarding disorder. It will take place at the Chelmsford Senior Center parking lot from 9 AM to 12 PM. In a drive-thru format, attendees can conveniently drop off items such as textiles, shoes, and handbags without exiting their vehicles. The event is free and open to all, with volunteers on hand to assist with unloading.
The textile recycling initiative, managed by Helpsy, will weigh the collected items and provide a monetary return based on their weight. This return will fund future initiatives of the Middlesex Hoarding Disorder Resource Network, emphasizing the ongoing community commitment to supporting affected individuals. It was noted that the Friends of the Senior Center will cover the costs for the shredding truck.
In conjunction with this event, Chelmsford has also been running workshops and support programs to assist those dealing with clutter. The “Buried in Treasures” workshops, co-facilitated by representatives from the Senior Center and Board of Health, offer structured learning experiences to teach participants skills in organization and decision-making. Participants are encouraged to tackle small decluttering projects, gradually building confidence to address larger spaces.
The workshops are designed to be supportive rather than clinical, incorporating humor and sensitivity to ease the emotional burden of decluttering. Techniques such as using dice to decide where to start decluttering help participants overcome feelings of overwhelm. The programs are open to anyone, providing valuable skills even to those without a diagnosed hoarding disorder.
Additionally, the “Joy of Less” program offers an alternative or continuation of the workshops, focusing on practical cleaning skills and the importance of maintaining cleanliness. Participants are encouraged to donate items to local charities, fostering a sense of community and purpose. A nominal fee ensures participant investment, while many aspects remain free.
The success of these initiatives has prompted other towns to establish similar programs, highlighting the effectiveness of Chelmsford’s approach in destigmatizing hoarding and providing essential support. The workshops emphasize empathy and understanding, encouraging participants to explore the emotional origins of their attachment to items and addressing any underlying trauma.
Partnerships with local libraries extend support to family members, helping them assist loved ones struggling with clutter. A cognitive behavioral therapy class following the “Buried in Treasures” program delves into the psychological aspects of hoarding, offering deeper insights into participants’ behaviors and emotional connections.
