- Meeting Overview:
The Chelmsford School Committee unanimously approved a motion to raise the hourly pay for interventionist tutors from $30 to $35. This decision was part of a broader meeting that also focused on enhancing security measures and expanding professional development opportunities for staff.
The pay increase for interventionist tutors was a significant topic of discussion. This adjustment was seen as necessary to remain competitive with neighboring districts, some of which offer higher rates. This wage increase is expected to help fill positions that have been hard to staff, leveraging Title One funds to mitigate any budgetary impact. Additionally, the committee discussed the diverse backgrounds of individuals in these positions, ranging from retired teachers to those not ready for full-time roles.
Another focus of the meeting was the implementation of new security measures across the Chelmsford School District. This system scans visitor IDs against a database to ensure safety and prints a visitor badge upon approval. The administration stressed the need for staff training to adapt to this new technology and ensure uniformity in greeting and protocol procedures.
Enhancements to the radio communication system within schools were also discussed. This upgrade, nearing completion, aims to improve internal communication, especially during emergencies. The district plans to engage a security consulting group for a follow-up audit after the Columbus Day weekend to evaluate the effectiveness of these upgrades and consider the next phase of security improvements. The administration is refining security protocols and emphasizing the importance of internal communication when incidents are reported.
Professional development was another prominent topic. The committee discussed various initiatives designed to enhance teacher training and support across the district. A notable initiative includes an articulation agreement with Fitchburg State University, offering graduate-level courses at a reduced cost. One such course focuses on Project-Based Learning, which is available to all teachers, who can earn professional development points or graduate credits.
A new graduate certificate program in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) was also introduced through a partnership with UMass Lowell. Eleven teachers are participating in the inaugural cohort, benefiting from a reduced tuition rate negotiated by the district. This program aims to provide a framework for DEI training, potentially leading to future cohorts based on interest levels.
Embedded professional development initiatives were highlighted, including mentoring programs and the introduction of math and technology integration specialists. These specialists support consistent program implementation and offer tailored solutions to teachers’ needs. The mentoring program, coordinated by Mary Beth McAllister, provides ongoing guidance and support through various methodologies, coaching, and modeling practices in real classroom settings.
The committee also reviewed the current status of ongoing capital projects, particularly the high school kitchen renovations. The kitchen is nearing substantial completion, with equipment installation and final inspections underway. To manage meal preparations during the renovation, food service staff have been working at another site and transporting food, a process that has been well-received by students.
Additionally, the construction of tennis courts and a basketball area is progressing, with paving completed and painting expected to follow shortly. The McCarthy School’s front entryway and new traffic pattern changes were also discussed. The new traffic pattern, with buses entering the front and parent pickups at the back, has been implemented, and initial delays are being monitored with feedback from parents.
The meeting concluded with a review of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) resolutions for the upcoming fall membership meeting. Members were encouraged to read through the ten resolutions and prepare to vote on them in an October meeting. The committee also discussed the importance of designating a delegate to represent them at the conference.
