Chelmsford Select Board Meeting Highlights: Caregiver Support Initiatives Take Center Stage
- Meeting Overview:
The Chelmsford Select Board meeting prominently featured discussions on enhancing support for caregivers of individuals with dementia, with various initiatives and events announced to assist those in need.
The discussion was led by Debbie Surriani, director of the Chelmsford Senior Center, and April Hunt, elder support services coordinator, who emphasized the challenges faced by caregivers, often part of the “sandwich generation,” balancing responsibilities for both elderly relatives and their own families. A caregiver support group facilitated by Hunt meets twice a month, offering a platform for sharing experiences and concerns. This group supports caregivers by providing a qualified companion program, enabling caregivers to take necessary breaks while their loved ones are engaged in activities.
A significant highlight was the introduction of a caregiver speaker series, set to commence on May 12, focusing on dementia and caregiving. The initial session will feature Karen Copala, a certified dementia practitioner, who will address common and unforeseen questions caregivers may face. This series aims to arm caregivers with knowledge and preparedness for unexpected behaviors and symptoms associated with dementia. Future sessions will cover topics such as effective communication techniques and maintaining independence for elderly individuals, featuring experts like Nicole McGearan from the Alzheimer’s Association.
The meeting also addressed the necessity of self-care for caregivers. To this end, Bridges of Epoch, in collaboration with the Senior Center, offers both in-person and virtual caregiver support groups. These sessions accommodate caregivers’ varying schedules, allowing them to attend while their memory-impaired loved ones participate in engagement activities. This approach provides respite for caregivers and stimulation for their loved ones, fostering a supportive environment.
In anticipation of future challenges, the meeting announced a panel discussion on June 9 featuring local professionals who will tackle topics such as legal considerations and healthcare navigation for caregivers. Margaret Hoe from Echel Hoey and O’Connor Attorneys of Law will discuss essential legal documents needing preparation, stressing the importance of early conversation about future planning. Joanne Fontaine, a local geriatric care manager, will elucidate the support available from geriatric care managers, particularly in navigating healthcare and addressing family dynamics.
The meeting also highlighted the benefits of adult day social programs, as discussed by Colleen Normandy from the Chelmsford Council on Aging. Such programs are valuable for both caregivers and their loved ones, providing much-needed respite and engagement. The discussion included personal testimonials about the benefits of memory care facilities, with one participant sharing a positive experience of a loved one thriving in such an environment.
To further support caregivers, a new initiative offering massage sessions was introduced by the Friends of the Senior Center. Starting April 24, caregivers can access relaxing massages for four consecutive Thursdays, helping to alleviate stress and promote well-being. This initiative emphasizes community care and inclusivity, welcoming all caregivers to participate, regardless of their specific circumstances.
Caregivers often face feelings of guilt and uncertainty in seeking additional help or considering care facility placement for their loved ones. Initial support measures, such as day programs and companion programs, were recommended as the first line of defense, enabling caregivers to manage their responsibilities at home for as long as possible. The meeting concluded with an emphasis on the value of community engagement and the potential for improved relationships once the caregiving burden is lessened.
