The meeting also addressed traffic safety at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Eastern Avenue. Naomi’s Abot, a resident, raised concerns about vehicles running red lights during school arrival and dismissal times, posing a significant hazard to students. She urged the commission to increase police presence during peak hours to deter such behavior. The commission acknowledged the safety concerns but cited limited police resources as a challenge to providing consistent enforcement. Another topic was the proposal regarding traffic calming measures on Washington Avenue near a school bus stop. Jason Adams from Bowman Engineering presented findings that supported the installation of a high-visibility crosswalk, curb bump-outs, and ADA-compliant ramps. The proposal initially included a raised crosswalk or speed table to combat speeding, but concerns about the impact on emergency vehicle response led to a decision to proceed without the speed table. The commission unanimously agreed to implement the high-visibility crosswalk and associated safety features, prioritizing student safety while considering the practical implications for emergency services.

In addition to parking and traffic safety discussions, the commission considered several handicap parking applications. Hilda Ramirez’s request for a dedicated handicap parking space was denied due to the availability of a nearby existing space and her access to a driveway. Despite the denial, the commission assured Ramirez that she could use the existing handicap space without fear of police intervention, as long as she displayed a valid placard.

The meeting also addressed a handicap parking application from Tanya Raymond, who shared her struggles with chronic health issues and the lack of a driveway at her residence. The commission approved her request for a new handicap parking spot across the street.
