- Meeting Overview:
At a recent Cherry Hill School Board meeting, issues surrounding the treatment of special education staff and students, as well as the impact of technology in classrooms, took precedence. Community members participated in public comment periods, expressing concerns over the strain on special education teachers, the pervasive use of personal technology by students, and the need for inclusivity and cultural sensitivity training to combat Islamophobia in the district.
The meeting began with a discussion on the challenges facing the special education department. Concerns were raised by a community member regarding the addition of classes that may exacerbate the burnout among special education staff. The Committee Report presented by a board member touched upon the impact of the teacher shortage on world language courses and the intention to take a closer look at world language curriculums. The board also reflected upon attendance and truancy research proposals, updated course study booklets, and summer program plans.
Technology use in classrooms was another focal point of the meeting. Teachers voiced their concerns over the disruptive nature of cell phones, including policy violations and excessive use during class time. The need for further discussion and policy feedback was emphasized, as was the challenge of addressing toxic behavior online and balancing technology resources with free play for younger students.
Financial transparency and accountability were also discussed, with the business and facilities committee reporting an unmodified opinion on the budget audit. Critical infrastructure updates, such as HVAC work across 11 schools and various construction projects, were addressed to ensure the maintenance of school facilities.
Human resources matters, including the filling of pre-K positions and approval of job descriptions, were discussed. The Policy and Legislation committee did not convene in January but planned to develop its agenda for the subsequent meeting. The Strategic Planning committee reported on demographic studies and communication audits, emphasizing the importance of technology use and cell phone policies in classrooms.
During the public comments, speakers brought forth various concerns and suggestions. A student highlighted the need for curriculums to address Islamophobia, while another supported the call for training to combat this issue. The discussion also covered course content materials, with a community member pointing out the lack of balance in the African American history course. Concerns were raised about the availability and placement of special education programs.
The board heard from several community members on the subject of Islamophobia and the treatment of Muslim students. The lack of Islamophobia training was criticized, and calls were made for a more inclusive environment, especially during Muslim Heritage Month. The need for restorative practices and mutual respect was underscored, as were concerns about the enforcement of policies, the decline in world language class enrollment, and the transparency in the selection of a new board member.
The acting superintendent responded to concerns about communication issues and the lack of Islamophobia training. Updates on the high school transition process, preschool program expansion, and Unity Day celebrations were provided, and the board moved into an executive session to conclude the meeting.
