Cherry Hill School Board Meeting Addresses Special Education Concerns and Celebrates Athletic Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Cherry Hill School Board meeting, discussions centered on contentious issues within the Special Education Department, particularly focusing on the concerns raised by parents about the district’s handling of students with special needs. The board also celebrated the successes of local student-athletes in fall sports.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to parental concerns regarding the treatment of students with disabilities under 504 plans or IEPs. Parents, including Grace Shiner and Virgil Tayar, voiced concerns about seniors facing repercussions for attendance issues related to their disabilities, which marks a departure from previous practices. Despite assurances from the board that no new policies were in place, the parents questioned whether changes had been made that disproportionately affected seniors. Jeff Potowitz, another concerned parent, criticized the district for its handling of federal complaints and highlighted the challenges faced by economically disadvantaged families in advocating for their children, particularly in special education. Potowitz referenced a Supreme Court case to illustrate the difficulties faced by families dealing with powerful school district administrations, emphasizing that the current power dynamics favor those with resources.
Nicole Spiegel, a parent from Cherry Hill, shared a personal account of her struggles with the district’s Special Education Department. Spiegel detailed the challenges her son Nathan faced, including being declassified from pre-K to kindergarten despite multiple diagnoses and experiencing significant regression. She reported that her son was subjected to 32 suspensions due to behaviors tied to his disability, describing it as a denial of his right to a free and public education. Spiegel criticized the district’s failure to provide appropriate educational support and highlighted ongoing safety issues, with her son being restrained at school. Michael Nussbaum echoed Spiegel’s concerns, pointing to systemic cultural problems within the district and the lack of meaningful support for students with special needs. He criticized the district’s approach to inclusion, which he described as “box checking” rather than genuine integration aligned with IEPs.
In contrast to these concerns, the board also took time to celebrate the accomplishments of student-athletes. The meeting featured recognitions for various fall sports teams, with nearly 850 high school and 1,200 middle school students participating. Notable achievements included the East Boys Cross Country team ranking 8th in the state and the East Girls Cross Country team ranking 9th in New Jersey. The West Girls Field Hockey team was recognized as one of the top 20 teams in South Jersey. Additionally, the East football and soccer teams were listed among the top 10 in the region. The meeting also highlighted the success of the East Girls Volleyball team, which achieved a perfect 16-0 record in their division. Coaches reflected on the importance of teamwork and the lasting relationships formed during the season.
The meeting also provided updates on ongoing construction projects within the district, with progress reported at Kilmer and Rosa schools. The furniture delivery had commenced, and teachers were organizing their classrooms ahead of the school’s opening on January 5, 2026. At Karusi, construction continued with temporary classrooms set up, and the financial oversight for these projects was emphasized. Future projects included renovations at Beck and high school auditorium updates, with work scheduled to begin in April 2024 and completion expected by December 2024.
In terms of community engagement, Public Information Officer Nina Barati presented metrics reflecting the district’s efforts to enhance communication and transparency. The district’s website saw 2.8 million views, with a noted preference for mobile access. Social media initiatives showed increased engagement, with Facebook recording over 1.3 million views and Instagram nearly 500,000 views. Barati also announced plans for an AI tool on the district website aimed at improving engagement by answering frequently asked questions.
