- Meeting Overview:
The recent Cinnaminson School Board meeting highlighted the impressive accomplishments of the Cinnaminson High School Marching Band, the expansion of preschool facilities, and a focus on inclusive education. Additionally, the meeting addressed student achievements across academics and athletics, alongside ongoing facility upgrades within the district.
A major highlight of the evening was the recognition of the Cinnaminson High School Marching Band, which was celebrated for its success in achieving the Tournament of Bands State Champion title for the 2024-2025 season. The band secured three first-place finishes and received accolades in music and percussion, with the percussion section remaining undefeated throughout the competition season. The band’s director, Dr. Dal Salvio, reflected on the remarkable growth of the band, noting an increase in membership which nearly doubled over the past three years. A video presentation celebrated the band’s achievements. Band members received applause and were reminded of the lifelong skills they develop through participation.
In addition to celebrating the marching band’s success, the meeting focused on updates within the district, particularly concerning preschool facilities. The superintendent reported on the ongoing preparations for the Child Study Team’s relocation to Colonial Square, with the next phases of preschool expansion soon to follow. By February 1st, two new preschool classrooms are set to open, with a lottery planned for additional pre-k seats. Furthermore, new learning cottages at New Albany and Rush Schools will house a STEM lab and music room.
Ashley NE, president of the Cinnaminson CPAG, highlighted the group’s efforts to improve special education. She announced an upcoming presentation by the executive director of the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education, focusing on creating inclusive public schools. This presentation aims to inform and engage the community, promoting awareness and understanding of inclusive practices.
Alongside these developments, student achievements were prominently featured. The Unity Club, in collaboration with athletic teams, raised over $1,500 to assemble “sweet cases,” duffel bags filled with essentials for children. Eighth-grade Unity Club members visited the 9/11 Museum in New York City.
The board also acknowledged the success of fall sports teams, celebrating the achievements of student-athletes across various disciplines. The varsity football team’s commendable season concluded with a victory, while the boys’ soccer team reached the semi-finals of the playoffs. Individual honors were awarded to standout athletes in cross country, with junior Jake Wigers recognized for his performance.
The meeting provided updates on the Student Safety Data System (SSDS), presented by Mr. Capello. The report revealed a decrease in high school incidents from 20 to 12, although middle school incidents rose from 21 to 25. Substance abuse incidents increased from 7 to 10, and harassment incidents rose from 6 to 10. Despite these fluctuations, Mr. Capello emphasized the importance of accurate reporting for situational awareness, noting that the overall number of incidents remains low compared to statewide data.
Facility updates were discussed, including the board-approved lease agreement for the Child Study Team Annex, with renovations expected to conclude by December 13. The meeting also addressed the collapse of concrete steps in the high school football stadium due to a storm, with plans underway for their removal. The board explored options for expanding the district’s square footage through a referendum, with an architect scheduled for a facilities walkthrough to inform potential decisions.
Public comment periods allowed community members to voice their concerns and suggestions. Amanda WB advocated for a gifted Individualized Education Program (IEP) for her son, Logan, highlighting the challenges faced by gifted students with ADHD. She expressed disappointment in the district’s response and emphasized the need for structured support for gifted students.
