- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Cinnaminson School Board meeting, the board addressed a variety of issues, ranging from staff recognition to important student programs, and community concerns regarding bullying. The most salient part of the meeting entailed the recognition of several educators for their outstanding contributions, juxtaposed with the community’s concerns about bullying and racial incidents within the schools.
The meeting was marked by the acknowledgment of noteworthy achievements by the district’s educators. Awards were presented to Mrs. Aguad, who received the Governor’s Educator of the Year award for her dedication to her students and community support, including holiday cheer and donations for women and infants in need. Mrs. Barry was celebrated with the Board of Education Achievement Award for her empathy and organizational skills. Mrs. Arelas was praised for her passion for teaching advanced mathematics and for her involvement in extracurricular activities. Mrs. Leits was named Teacher of the Year, recognized for her exceptional teaching abilities and support of student success. Furthermore, Miss Kelly White was commended for her expertise in special education as the recipient of the Memorial School Achievement Award.
The meeting also highlighted the Cinnaminson Middle School boys mentoring program, a 12-week initiative focusing on the academic, social, and emotional success of 8th grade male students. The program, facilitated by CMS staff members and a licensed clinical counselor, covered topics such as compassion, coping skills, emotional intelligence, and healthy relationships. Positive outcomes were noted, including academic growth, improved confidence, and enhanced self-discipline among the students. Mentors and students shared their experiences. The board expressed its hope to expand the program to include mentoring for both boys and girls in the future.
In addition to these accolades, the meeting also welcomed new staff members and approved various personnel actions, including appointments and resignations. The board approved Heather Van Modder as the new Transportation Supervisor and introduced new staff members Elizabeth Gre, Alexis Olson, and Jessica BR. Discussions on professional development, field trip approvals, new instructional materials, and policy adoption were also part of the meeting’s agenda.
However, the meeting took a serious tone when the issue of bullying and racial incidents within the schools was raised during the public comment section. Community members expressed their concerns, with one parent sharing a personal experience and urging the board to address the issues more effectively. Another community member called for accountability and action to be taken against bullying.
Other business conducted included the approval of teaching overloads, student teachers, substitutes, and tutors, as well as job descriptions and contracts for home instruction, student placement, and consultant agreements. The policy committee reported on homeschool students’ participation in extracurricular activities and planned a follow-up meeting to continue the discussion. Grants, budgets, contracts, donations, and bus emergency evacuation drills were also topics of approval.
