Cinnaminson School District Embraces STEM with New Courses and Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Cinnaminson School Board meeting highlighted the district’s commitment to enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through new course offerings and recognized several student achievements. The board also addressed important personnel matters and community engagement initiatives, underlining the district’s ongoing dedication to educational excellence and community involvement.
The meeting brought to light an exciting expansion in the district’s curriculum with the introduction of new electives aimed at fostering student interest in STEM fields. At the high school level, students will have the opportunity to enroll in marine biology and sports medicine courses. The marine biology class, taught by an experienced deep-sea fishing captain, will immerse students in the study of ocean ecosystems. Meanwhile, the sports medicine elective will provide insights into careers in physical therapy, reflecting the district’s focus on practical, career-oriented education.
Plans are underway to further expand the STEM curriculum at the middle school level with an aviation and aerospace elective. This course is expected to engage students with drones and flight simulators while educating them about aviation careers. The speaker at the meeting highlighted the growing demand in the aviation sector, mentioning the potential for drone taxis to transport Olympians during the 2028 games in Los Angeles. The district’s future aspirations include expanding the aviation program to the high school level and introducing tech theater and video game programming courses.
The meeting also celebrated notable student achievements. Junior Abigail Grugan was congratulated for winning the regional Poetry Out Loud competition at Rutgers University and will represent the school at the statewide competition. The Cinnaminson Affinity Group organized a day of learning and celebration for Muslim Heritage Month, where students explored Islamic patterns in art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The event concluded with a presentation by CHS alumni Yasmin Farret, emphasizing the significance of representation and Muslim Heritage Month.
In addition, the Future Cities program received recognition for its outstanding student projects. Mr. Garwood Bacon’s eighth-grade class was awarded for excellence in regional planning at the Future City competition with their project “Applewood,” which envisioned a sustainable community in Tasmania. This project focused on eliminating food waste through advanced agricultural hubs and renewable energy sources. The students involved were invited to join the meeting for recognition and a group picture, highlighting the district’s encouragement of innovative thinking and problem-solving skills among its students.
The board also addressed several personnel matters, including appointments, reappointments, resignations, and retirements. Notably, a special education teacher and a bus driver announced their retirements, and the board expressed regret over their departures. Approvals were also sought for leave of absences, teaching overloads, and student teacher placements.
In the area of curriculum and instruction, the board approved monthly professional development requests and field trips, as well as a calendar change to accommodate a snow day. The special education segment saw the ratification of contracts and agreements with educational service providers, including one-on-one support for students and tuition contracts with specialized schools.
Public comment was invited, with community members reminded to focus on agenda items and adhere to time restrictions. The meeting’s public session concluded with acknowledgments of student and staff accomplishments, including successful reports from high school students and recognition of eighth-grade project challenge participants. The board then transitioned into executive session, returning to public session to address any remaining business before adjourning.
