- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Cliffside Park School Board was marked by celebrations of exceptional student achievements, resolutions in support of co-curricular activities, and the approval of the much-anticipated Homecoming Dance. The meeting also saw board members addressing student concerns regarding changes in the school environment.
The board began by recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of two students. Marillo Sadad Fiera was celebrated for achieving a perfect score on a math exam, a testament to his hard work and dedication. High school volleyball star, Raina Satou, was also spotlighted for receiving the North Jersey Bergen Record Athlete of the Week award. Raina’s coach commended her dedication, selflessness, and positive impact on the team, sentiments echoed by the board, who expressed their appreciation for the growth of the volleyball program.
A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to discussing and approving resolutions that centered on enhancing support for co-curricular activities. Superintendent Dr. Mark Hayes led the discussion on Resolution number 18, which proposed moving students with interrupted formal education to elementary schools. The board was united in believing this move was a positive step forward, and expressed gratitude for the funds supporting this initiative. Resolution number 19 proposed an additional stipend for a winter cheerleading coach, enabling the cheerleaders to be active during the basketball season. Both Dr. Hayes and Louis Alfano, the Business Administrator/Board Secretary, were thanked for their efforts in securing the necessary funds.
Dr. Hayes also informed the board about the reinstatement of funding in the co-curricular section of contracts, which would further support cheerleaders and coaches. He confirmed that winter cheer would be available for both boys and girls, underlining the importance of inclusivity under Title IX.
Board member Joseph Capano expressed his gratitude for being elected as the new Vice President of the Bergen County School Boards Association. His fellow board member, Teddy F. Tarabokija, commended Dr. Hayes for his leadership and expressed confidence in his tenure as president.
A student representative brought up some concerns about the school environment, specifically the removal of tables in the hallways and the inconsistency of study halls with the drop schedule. The board assured the students that they would address these issues and find suitable solutions.
Another development was the announcement of the upcoming Homecoming dance, set to be held off-site at Launa in Fairview. The event has met the minimum ticket requirement and is seen as a triumph in reviving the tradition of Homecoming in recent years.
