Coach John Pontes Honored with Track Dedication at Clifton School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
In a Clifton School Board meeting, Coach John Pontes was recognized for his extensive contributions to the community, culminating in the dedication of the Clifton High School track in his name. The meeting also addressed a variety of issues, including updates on bullying data, infrastructure projects, and special education initiatives, with numerous board members and community stakeholders participating in the discussions.
One item at the meeting was the honoring of Coach John Pontes, whose career in athletics at Clifton High School has been marked by significant achievements. A resolution was passed acknowledging his induction into the state coaches hall of fame in 2007, his recognition as Passaic County All Sports Coach of the Year in 2009, and his designation as coach of the decade in multiple sports. Under his guidance, Clifton athletes have secured numerous county, sectional, and state titles. The board’s decision to name the high school track the “Coach John Pontes Track” underscores his legacy and the impact he has had on student-athletes over the years.
Another topic was the presentation by Mr. Michael Doctor, director of operations and student services, who provided an update on harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) as well as violence, vandalism, and substance abuse (VVSA) data for the 2023-2024 school year. A notable reduction in incidents of violence, vandalism, and substance abuse at the elementary level was reported, attributed to proactive measures by staff and administrators. Doctor explained that the improved categorization of disciplinary actions under revised policies has allowed for clearer data reporting. In terms of confirmed HIB cases, the elementary schools reported 17 confirmed and 49 alleged cases, while Clifton High School reported two confirmed cases with no additional allegations. Doctor emphasized that not all negative interactions qualify as HIB, often addressing incidents through counseling rather than formal classification.
The meeting also focused on facility updates, with Commissioner Brunciak reporting on ongoing projects. The completion of gym and auditorium air conditioning at Christopher Columbus Middle School was noted, along with updates on the building management system at Clifton High School. Significant repairs included a completed gym floor replacement at School 8 due to water damage, costing over $180,000, and a planned full gym floor replacement at School 12. Attention was drawn to a pine oak tree near Maple Valley School in advanced stages of decline.
In addition to infrastructure, the board discussed special education initiatives. Heather Routollo from the special services department shared updates on the SESY program and discussed referral statistics for the school year. The importance of integrating a multi-tiered support system (MTSS) to provide interventions and referrals was emphasized. Professional development efforts were highlighted, including the “Handle with Care” program for staff and certification programs in Orton Gillingham for special education teachers. Collaboration with the Clifton Health Department for autism parent support groups was also mentioned.
The board addressed several other issues, such as new literacy screening mandates from the New Jersey Department of Education, requiring valid literacy screeners for students in kindergarten through third grade. Clifton plans to implement the STAR early literacy assessments, funded through an NJDE grant. Dr. Valerie Cropniaak detailed additional grants aimed at enhancing literacy support, including the NJDOE coach grant for grades 6 through 12.
Public comments included concerns about Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and the district’s plans to pursue similar initiatives, particularly in nursing. Funding uncertainties were noted as potential challenges to implementing these programs. The board also discussed communication preferences for emergency notifications, debating the use of text messages versus emails.
