- Meeting Overview:
In the latest meeting of the Collingswood School Board, members addressed the resignation of the School Liaison Officer (SLO) and the subsequent decision to carefully select a suitable replacement. This decision comes in light of a reported reduction in calls for service, particularly at the high school and middle school levels. The Chief of Police, Carrie, provided substantial insights into the SLO program’s impact, highlighting instances where the presence of the SLO was beneficial, such as in investigations involving missing students and coordination with other law enforcement agencies.
The meeting also encompassed discussions on the upcoming bond referendum, including a special board meeting and community information sessions. The resignation of the SLO sparked contrasting opinions during the public comment section, with some community members advocating for its immediate replacement to maintain the program’s positive impacts, while others suggested reallocating the funds to potentially hire a social worker to better support the students.
Superintendent Dr. Fredrick H. McDowell, Jr. provided an update on enrollment and the school’s financial situation, expressing concern over the lack of increased funding and the reduction in state aid.
The meeting proceeded to cover an array of topics, including the recognition of standout student athletes, Collingswood High School’s participation in a Model United Nations convention, and the one-year anniversary of the Wellness Center, which has supported over 250 students. The Business Administrator and Board Secretary presented financial reports, and the board acknowledged a generous donation of technology equipment from a local resident.
In terms of educational and extracurricular programming, the board celebrated the start of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, encouraging initiatives to increase awareness of brain differences and foster inclusivity. The board also promoted preschool registration and the upcoming performance of Shrek the Musical by the Collingswood theater group.
Additionally, the Kingswood High School Renaissance program was recognized for its role in honoring students for their positive contributions. The Curriculcommittee oversaw approvals for district curriculum, assessment programs, field trips, and the upcoming school calendar, which included debate on the inclusion of Jewish High Holidays.
The school calendar discussions were marked by debate over the inclusion of testing dates and days off, with a decision to only include testing dates in the supplemental calendar.
During the second public comment opportunity, concerns about teacher morale, recruitment, and communication were raised, including the lack of staff contact information on the school website. The Personnel committee presented items for approval, including resignations, appointments, and contract renewals, with noted exceptions and abstentions in the vote.
The Culture, Climate, and Policy committee presented updates to district policies for a first read, clarifying that the changes were recommended by a policy service used by many districts. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, after addressing the Miscellaneous section which included the previous month’s Hib report and the approval of potential job descriptions for existing staff.
