Communication Board Installation and Lease Renewals Highlight New Ulm Park & Recreation Commission Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Park & Recreation Commission meeting on December 8, 2025, addressed the installation of a communication board in parks and the renewal of a lease agreement with Turner Gymnastics Academy (TGA). The commission unanimously approved both initiatives, which are set to enhance community engagement and improve resource allocation for local recreational facilities.
The installation of a communication board, a notable feature of the meeting, aims to increase accessibility in public spaces by providing a visual tool for individuals with verbal communication difficulties. The board will be two-sided, featuring both English and Spanish, to serve a diverse community. The initiative was spearheaded by Assistant Director Corman, who outlined the development process which included a fundraising campaign at Tavern 507 and contributions from the Optimus Club. The board’s installation is planned for Herman Heights Park, chosen for its accessibility and high usage. Commissioners expressed enthusiasm for this project, recognizing its potential to foster inclusivity in the community. The commission’s vote on the installation passed without opposition, and appreciation was extended to the donors who supported this initiative.
In a decision, the commission also discussed and approved the renewal of the lease agreement with TGA for 2026 and 2027. The lease includes a monthly rental increase from $3,925 to $4,180, reflecting increased employee costs related to facility maintenance and custodial duties due to extensive use by TGA. A new provision in the lease allows TGA to retain 90% of the gross revenue from advertising within the facility, while the city will receive the remaining 10%. This arrangement mirrors similar agreements the city has with other user groups. The commission unanimously voted to recommend the lease renewal to the city council.
The meeting progressed with a focus on community engagement and development, as Director Schugall provided updates from recent city council meetings. Notably, a comprehensive master plan for park and recreation was discussed, with the staff having received a 50% draft from ISG. The plan, still under review for necessary corrections, will be presented to the public in an open house scheduled for January 12th. This initiative seeks public feedback to shape the future of New Ulm’s park system, emphasizing community involvement in decision-making processes.
The commission also moved forward with its annual election of officers for 2026. With outgoing members Chair Bugler and Commissioner Lunenburg acknowledged for their service, Kurt Johnson was nominated and unanimously approved as the new chair, while Amy Johnson was unanimously elected as vice chair.
Director Schugall reported on a series of donations totaling $7,525, supporting various initiatives, including the Pollinator Park, Riverside Environmental Learning Center, and the communication board project. The commission voted to recommend the city council’s acceptance of these donations, underscoring community support for local recreational projects.
Further updates included the renewal of Turner Gymnastics Academy’s lease agreement, with details of the agreement’s terms reflecting adjustments to rental costs and advertising revenue sharing. This renewal ensures the continued operation of gymnastics programs and supports local youth sports development.
In the realm of recreation programs, Schugall highlighted the successful implementation of a lifeguarding class, a collaborative effort with New Ulm High School and New Ulm Cathedral. Offering water safety and lifeguard certification, this class provides students a valuable opportunity at no cost. Additionally, adult leagues, including volleyball and basketball, are gaining popularity, keeping the recreation center bustling with activity.
Community events also took center stage, with Schugall reporting on the Wine Marked Holiday event, which featured arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, and live reindeer. Despite cold weather, the event was well-received, highlighting community involvement and sponsorship.
Lastly, the resignation of recreation program supervisor Liz Mallaloy was announced. The recruitment process for her replacement is underway, with applications being accepted until December 14th.
