Community Concerns Spotlight Safety Issues in Pequannock High School Auditorium
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Pequannock School Board meeting was marked by a spirited public comment session that raised concerns regarding safety and maintenance issues at the high school auditorium. Lucas Nasion, a recent graduate and aspiring educator, emphasized the facility’s multifaceted role as a community hub and academic space. He pointed out pressing safety concerns, including overdue fire retardant treatment for curtains, faulty lighting, and obstructed pathways backstage. Nasion’s detailed observations highlighted the auditorium’s importance to local culture and education.
Nasion’s concerns were specific and urgent. He noted that many of the auditorium’s curtains were frayed and tearing, presenting a significant fire hazard. He highlighted that only 60% of the auditorium’s lights were operational, which posed safety risks during performances. The aisle LED strips, designed to aid navigation, were also non-functional, exacerbating safety issues. Nasion raised alarm over the dimmer rack, which controls the lighting fixtures, being left open and covered in dust. This neglect, he warned, could lead to overheating and potential failures. Additionally, he criticized the storage loft’s inaccessibility to faculty and the improper storage of equipment, which further hindered efficient space use.
Nasion also addressed seating issues, specifically the dislodging of armrests during performances, which posed risks to audience members. He recalled instances where armrests fell off, disrupting performances and potentially causing injuries. His passionate appeal for improvements was met with acknowledgment from the board, who encouraged him to submit his detailed notes for further consideration.
In addition to safety concerns, the board meeting celebrated the achievements of district educators and support staff. Several individuals were recognized for their contributions to the school community. Jennifer Mosera was honored as North Boulevard’s Educator of the Year for her innovative teaching approach with children with autism and special needs. Lorraine Latmpa, North Boulevard’s Educational Support Professional of the Year, was commended for her nurturing role and extensive service.
Other honorees included Alfredo Mariano, known as Mr. Al, recognized for his dedication as a custodian at SJG, and Amanda Slesinger, celebrated for her long-standing commitment to first-grade education. Julie Bud and Carol Kaine were acknowledged for their outstanding work at Hillview, while Marianne Goodwin received accolades for her impactful career in physical education and coaching at Pequannock Valley School. The recognitions underscored the district’s pride in its staff’s dedication and achievements.
The meeting also highlighted the “Portrait of a Graduate” initiative, a comprehensive vision aimed at equipping students with essential skills and competencies for post-high school life. This initiative involves extensive community input and focuses on core competencies such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. The introduction of an emblem representing these values was discussed, with plans to integrate these competencies into the curriculum.
Another topic was the progress of various district projects, including the development of a preschool and sensory playground and efforts to secure funding through a local recreation improvement grant. Updates were provided on the district’s budget preparation and the challenges posed by increasing health insurance costs. The board expressed appreciation for the administrative team’s careful work in navigating budget constraints.
The meeting also addressed the ongoing work of an AI committee, which aims to educate parents and staff on technology use, and the continuation of the Shartime Allied Health Academy within the district.
The efforts of the music and theater programs at Pequannock Township High School were celebrated, with particular praise for the contributions of new staff members who ensured the continuation of successful performances despite earlier uncertainties.
