- Meeting Overview:
The Old Bridge School Board meeting was dominated by fervent public support for Superintendent David Cittadino, whose contract renewal appeared uncertain. The meeting also addressed curriculum delays, transportation funding, and upcoming community engagement events.
Superintendent David Cittadino’s contract renewal was the focal point of the meeting, with numerous letters and public comments supporting his continued leadership. One letter praised Cittadino’s dedication and approachability, stating, “He has shown us all what true leadership is,” and emphasizing his impact on district morale. Another letter referenced Maya Angelou to underscore how Cittadino’s caring nature had made a lasting impression on students, staff, and families.
During the public comments, several residents and educators advocated for Cittadino. Stacy Pittz, an active PTA member, demanded transparency from the board, urging them to clarify their concerns about Cittadino and proposing an open forum for residents to discuss the issue.
Former board member Richard Dunn stressed the importance of fair consideration for Cittadino’s contract renewal, urging board members to meet with him individually to understand his contributions better. Dr. Ken Sylvestri, a school counselor, shared his experience joining the district under Cittadino’s leadership, praising his empathy and strength, particularly during difficult times.
Additional public comments echoed these sentiments. Tara Flynn from Jonas Middle School highlighted Cittadino’s community advocacy and his themes of family and unity, like “Ohana” and “One Love.” Gina Simon, another teacher, recounted how Cittadino’s support throughout her career had been pivotal, expressing her shock at the potential non-renewal of his contract. Parent Ron Barel argued that the focus should be on retaining Cittadino, not questioning his position, emphasizing his dedication to the district.
The board also addressed the curriculum approval process, which had been delayed despite a timeline provided by Dr. Tui. One board member expressed frustration over this delay, emphasizing the need to trust the teachers responsible for curriculum development and pointing out that budget issues should not have caused the postponement. A motion was made to bring the curriculum back for a vote in the following week.
Transportation funding was another significant topic. One member reflected on past practices of providing late buses and questioned current funding strategies. They referenced a proposal from Jackson that charged students fees for late bus services. Another member clarified that Jackson’s funding model still required substantial township support and highlighted the importance of community involvement and fundraising efforts to support transportation needs.
The meeting also touched on ethical guidelines for board members endorsing candidates during the election season. Members were reminded that any endorsements must clearly state they are made as private citizens and not on behalf of the board, in compliance with state ethics regulations.
In addition to these discussions, the board acknowledged several upcoming events, including a special meeting hosted by SEPTA covering topics relevant to special services. The meeting concluded with a motion to enter executive session, thanking attendees for their participation and input.
