- Meeting Overview:
The recent Cook County School Board meeting centered on developments concerning the financial strategies following the successful passage of a bond referendum. The board laid out a plan for the upcoming sale of referendum bonds, important for funding future district projects. Additional topics of interest included updates on student activities and the implementation of new educational programs.
One of the primary focuses of the meeting was the superintendent’s detailed report on the next steps for the bond sale. Scheduled for the December 12 meeting, financial consultant Michael Hart from PMA will discuss the bond sale process. The superintendent explained that a resolution would be presented for board approval, authorizing him to work with PMA and a colleague named Teresa to facilitate the sale. Recommendations from PMA suggest that selling all bonds at once could be more financially advantageous, allowing the district to invest the funds until project initiation. This strategy aims to balance the interest paid on debt with potential investment income, providing a fiscally responsible path forward.
The superintendent also highlighted collaborations with Lori from IC to finalize an agreement for managing bond-funded projects. This agreement will lead to hiring a design team and selecting a general contractor, with a construction manager to be appointed post-approval. The project oversight committee will reconvene to plan stakeholder engagement, design, and engineering assessments.
In addition to financial planning, the meeting addressed enhancements in educational programs and student involvement. Mr. Balang, an elementary school principal, provided an enthusiastic update on student leadership initiatives. He announced the reestablishment of the Sawtooth Mountain Elementary student council. Sixteen energetic fourth and fifth graders delivered speeches on various issues of importance to them, culminating in the election of seven students to the council. This initiative is seen as a valuable platform for cultivating leadership skills and encouraging student involvement in school governance.
Additionally, the recent Veterans Day assembly, featuring a notable speech by Alex Gugala from the YMCA, left a lasting impression on students by emphasizing career and leadership development, caring for others, and loving one’s passions.
Superintendent Lindholm also reported on the task force’s ongoing efforts to enhance teacher evaluation systems, a priority for the current year. Monthly meetings are held to refine these systems, aligning them with statutory requirements. The superintendent attended training on the principal evaluation system.
The provision of free meals to students has led to increased participation in school meal programs, according to data shared in the superintendent’s written report. This initiative has drawn local media attention, highlighting its impact at both the state and local levels. The quality of food and accessibility for all students are driving factors behind this positive trend.
Student board representative Lexi Surba shared updates on winter sports and extracurricular activities. The boys’ basketball team and the Alpine and Nordic ski teams have begun captain’s practices, while girls’ basketball is set to start soon. The Andiron Club’s team bonding trip and increased membership reflect the vibrant student life within the district. Additionally, the National Honor Society inducted ten new members, marking their commitment to academics and community service, with their first volunteer opportunity at the Empty Bowls event.
The board managed several administrative items during the meeting. They adopted the consent agenda, accepted the October 2024 expenditure and revenue report, and approved the fiscal 2024 audit report without notable dissent. Resolutions canvassing the results of the recent special and general elections were discussed, with question one passing while questions two and three did not. The board acknowledged staff contributions to the election process and approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of certificates of election.
Personnel changes were also a topic of interest. The board approved the hiring of Susan Jeric as a community education coordinator, recognizing her credentials as a licensed parent education educator and American Sign Language instructor. Her role is considered a significant asset for early childhood family education classes, given the scarcity of licensed professionals in this area. Jeric’s position will be part-time and flexible, enabling her to teach and work as a paraeducator.
