Cook County School Board Welcomes New Members and Discusses Key Roles and Policies
- Meeting Overview:
The Cook County School Board meeting brought developments, including the introduction of new board members, the election of board officers, and discussions on policy and financial oversight. Key highlights included the swearing-in of a student representative and a new board member, along with the appointment of board officers.
The meeting commenced with the introduction of Greta, a junior who will serve as a student representative. Greta’s extensive involvement in extracurricular activities such as volleyball, softball, the National Honor Society, and the Unified Club was highlighted, signaling her readiness to contribute to the board’s discussions. Following Greta’s introduction, a new board member for District Four, Quinn McCloughan, was officially welcomed. The chair emphasized the significance of the oath of office. McCloughan pledged to support the Constitution and dutifully execute his responsibilities as a board member.
Attention then shifted to the election of board officers. Dan Shirley was nominated and elected as board chair by acclamation, with no other contenders. The process was described as efficient. Carrie Jansen self-nominated for the role of board clerk, preferring this role over that of the treasurer, and was elected by acclamation. The board members engaged in a light-hearted and collaborative discussion about these roles.
The focus then turned to the election of the board treasurer, a position that involves reviewing financial transactions to ensure accuracy. Despite initial hesitance from a new member about taking on the treasurer role, Quinn McCloughan was nominated and elected by acclamation. McCloughan acknowledged the need for initial support in fulfilling the treasurer’s duties.
Subsequent discussions addressed Policy 209, which includes the code of ethics for board members. It was suggested that members review the policy individually, as it serves as an annual reminder of ethical guidelines, offering new insights with each reading.
The board also addressed organizational matters, including meeting schedules and locations. Superintendent Chris Lindholm detailed the proposed calendar, which includes meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month, with exceptions in July and December. The calendar also accounts for work sessions in Grand Portage in October and March to enhance community engagement. Adjustments were made to avoid conflicts with other events, such as the MSBA conference.
Financial oversight was further discussed with the authorization of electronic funds transfers by the district’s business manager, a decision that was unanimously approved. The board assignments for 2025 were also considered, with members expressing their preferences for committee roles. There was an emphasis on matching board members’ interests and experience with appropriate roles, particularly in light of upcoming negotiations and budget considerations.
The meeting also touched on principal contracts and confidential employee negotiations. The board acknowledged the need for a gradual introduction of newer members to negotiation teams, particularly those involving the Teamsters and confidential employees.
Lastly, the board discussed compensation rates for school board members, which currently stand at an annual stipend of $3,300, with an additional $700 for the board chair. The conversation also included stipends for appointed contract negotiators and reimbursement for mileage. A motion was made to retain the current compensation levels.
The board concluded the meeting by approving the financial institutions for district operations and designating the Cook County News Herald as the official newspaper for public notices. A motion to authorize key individuals, including the superintendent and board chair, as contacts for legal counsel was also approved, maintaining consistency in legal practices.
