Cranbury Municipal Alliance Discusses Fentanyl Risk Among Seniors and Jamfest Preparations
- Meeting Overview:
In their recent meeting, the Cranbury Municipal Alliance focused on a range of issues, including the trend of fentanyl-related overdoses among seniors in New Jersey, preparations for the upcoming Jamfest event, and the potential purchase of a cotton candy machine. These discussions were accompanied by updates on community and school programs aimed at addressing public health and safety.
A primary concern at the meeting was the police department’s report on the increase of fentanyl-related overdoses among seniors statewide. Although Cranbury Township reported no overdose fatalities, the issue was emphasized as an urgent public health concern. The police chief reassured the committee that local statistics were comforting, with zero overdose deaths reported among seniors in Cranbury and neighboring areas. The chief had shared this data with a township committee member, who confirmed similar findings. The conversation underscored the importance of public education and awareness programs to combat the opioid crisis, especially among vulnerable populations like seniors.
In addition to the fentanyl issue, the Municipal Alliance devoted a portion of the meeting to the upcoming Jamfest, a community event anticipated by residents. Among the logistics discussed was the potential purchase of a cotton candy machine, a proposal that sparked debate on vendor selection. With four quotes obtained, Big Mart offered the lowest price of $319, cheaper than competitors like Walmart, Amazon, and Wayfair. However, concerns were raised about Big Mart’s credibility, questioning the disparity in pricing. The Alliance reached a consensus to verify the current quote and consider whether to purchase from a more recognized vendor, potentially paying a higher price for assurance.
The student council played an active role in Jamfest preparations, providing feedback from the student body. There were requests for diverse drink options, such as juices, snow cones, and slushies, with the possibility of incorporating a Kona ice truck. It was clarified that the Municipal Alliance would handle the game’s logistics, while the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) would address event feedback. Signups and preparations for Jamfest were confirmed as complete.
Attention was also given to the mental health first aid initiative planned for middle school students. Ongoing discussions with the Cranbury School counselor were reported, with updates expected in the following month. This program aims to provide essential support to students and address mental health challenges.
In addition, discussions explored the scheduling of speakers to address vaping among students and parents. Two potential speakers, Timothy Shoemaker and Robert Hackinson, were considered. Shoemaker’s “Save Your Breath Vaping Prevention Program” costs $1,700 for a single presentation, while Hackinson’s program is priced at $3,500. Both options were acknowledged as valuable, with the decision hinging on budget considerations. The committee recognized the importance of addressing vaping issues and aimed to finalize their choice in future meetings.
The meeting also touched on community programming for seniors, particularly in light of the fentanyl statistics. The senior center, under renovation, is expected to reopen in the spring, with interim programs held at the library. Partnerships with community organizations, like St. David’s and the First Presbyterian Church, offer various activities designed to engage seniors. The conversation highlighted the importance of making these resources accessible, especially for immobile seniors, and maintaining relevant outreach efforts.
Finally, the Alliance discussed the potential for organizing trips for seniors and providing volunteer opportunities to enhance their community involvement. Suggestions included theater outings and charitable activities, with an emphasis on allowing seniors to contribute meaningfully to the community.
