- Meeting Overview:
The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners recently held a meeting that highlighted contributions to the community, recognizing local organizations and individuals for their outstanding service and achievements.
The meeting’s most prominent event was the recognition ceremony led by Reverend Jonathan Murky, where the Outstanding Citizen Award was presented to New Life World Outreach Church. Represented by Senior Pastor Richard F. Meyers and his staff, the church was celebrated for its extensive community service. Their efforts included hosting relief initiatives for hurricane victims, operating a food pantry, and supporting various organizations financially. The church’s staff, noted for their dedication, had served as police chaplains and contributed to international humanitarian efforts, such as building a leper hospital in India and managing orphanages and schools globally. This recognition highlighted the church’s profound impact on both local and global communities, emphasizing volunteerism and leadership roles.
In addition to the award presentation, the meeting focused on the contributions of local organizations to education. Matt, likely the superintendent of schools, expressed gratitude to Don and the Green Flag Committee for their donations, which benefited students. He also acknowledged chaplains in schools, specifically recognizing John Parker for his support during a crisis involving a staff member’s sudden passing. Matt emphasized the strong faith presence in Millville.
Margaret Kefir, the K-2 supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts, shared encouraging news that Millville had been named “Best Community for Music” for the 13th consecutive year. She elaborated on the performing arts program, which spans from kindergarten through 12th grade and includes various disciplines like dance and painting. Her announcement of three students winning national Congressional awards for their artwork highlighted the program’s success and the students’ talent beyond music.
A musical segment followed, where Mr. Matt Adams led the chamber choir in a modern rendition of classic Christmas carols. Despite technical difficulties, the students performed admirably, engaging the audience and inviting participation. Katherine Pepe, a newly hired choir director, expressed enthusiasm about joining the Millville education system and acknowledged the support from her colleagues and the community. She introduced the after-school choir, the Magicals, who performed a selection of classic Christmas carols, including “Silent Night,” encouraging audience sing-alongs.
The meeting further recognized students who had gained entry into prestigious choirs, such as the All-State Choir and All-South Jersey Choir. Katherine shared her personal connection to Millville, expressing her desire to contribute to the community’s arts program, which was warmly received by the attendees.
Concluding the meeting, Commissioner Douglas A. Albrecht mentioned long-standing holiday traditions, including the distribution of poinsettias, a practice initiated over 20 years ago by George Mitchell. The event also featured a draw for free lunches, fostering a sense of community among attendees, and concluded with warm wishes for a happy and safe holiday season.
