Cumberland County Commissioners Greenlight $3 Million Sanitary Sewer and Road Project
- Meeting Overview:
The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners convened on May 12, 2025, to discuss several infrastructure projects, with the highlight being the approval of a $3 million joint venture with the BBMUA aimed at improving sanitary lines and road conditions. Various other resolutions and updates concerning local infrastructure and community initiatives were also addressed during the productive session.
18:40The most notable development was the approval of a resolution involving a $3 million collaboration with the BBMUA. This joint venture is set to enhance sanitary lines and facilitate road reconstruction in the borough, focusing on key areas such as Summer Road and West Avenue. The chair underscored the historical importance of these improvements and expressed gratitude towards the BBMUA for their collaborative efforts. The funding is expected to address long-standing issues and improve the overall infrastructure.
49:26In alignment with this infrastructure initiative, the board passed resolutions authorizing the borough engineer to solicit bids specifically for sanitary sewer improvements. This move aims to ensure that the necessary enhancements are executed promptly and efficiently, paving the way for better road conditions and improved public safety.
33:06Addressing another issue, attention was given to the ongoing drainage problems on Summer Avenue, which have been a consistent cause of flooding during heavy rains. Two proposals for designing a solution are currently under review, with plans to award the design soon and advance towards implementation. The drainage issue has been a subject of previous discussions involving the county administrator and the county engineer, highlighting the need for a long-term solution.
20:31Further infrastructure concerns were raised regarding Brewster Road, where initial design costs have doubled, prompting a reevaluation of the project. Efforts are underway to understand the reasons behind the increased costs and make necessary adjustments to move forward with the project efficiently.
The state of Wheat Road and Lincoln Avenue was also discussed, with multiple potholes raising public safety concerns due to increased traffic from new businesses. The slow response to previous reports of these conditions has been frustrating, and there is a push for prompt action to address the deteriorating roads.
25:24The Minnesota Estates project, plagued by delays since its inception in 2005-2006, was also highlighted. Correspondence has been sent to Einhorn Construction LLC, demanding the completion of outstanding work within 30 days. This includes final paving, street sign and light installations, tree planting, and road striping. The representative emphasized the need for completion, stating that residents deserve better service and living conditions.
A update from the fire department included the acquisition of a used command vehicle, which will serve dual purposes of daytime inspections and nighttime support for firefighters attending classes. Additionally, plans to provide an older vehicle to the EMS department were discussed.
The board also discussed ongoing fire safety initiatives, including the financing of a new brush truck through an anticipated bond. This vehicle will enhance the department’s response to fires, being smaller but well-equipped for quick and efficient action.
Moreover, a public safety committee meeting is planned to further discuss upgrades within the fire department. A recent training session on new firefighting methods involving a product called encapsulator T500 was reported, which aims to reduce health risks for firefighters while improving response effectiveness.
38:36The board also addressed various resolutions and ordinances, including the adoption of ordinance number 769, which amends application fees and escrow deposits. Resolution 100-25 was approved to correct an oversight in a previous resolution, aligning the extension of Tia Plant LLC’s licenses due to negotiation and soil testing complications.
43:23Additionally, a contract was awarded for roof replacement, with Wade Alpha Roofing offering the lowest quote. The project will address half of the roof due to budget constraints, with plans to consider the remaining roof area in the next budget cycle.
54:06In the public comments segment, appreciation was expressed for the police chief’s work in memory of a fallen officer, Lee Gonzalez. The dedication of a park and a recent candlelight vigil were mentioned as tributes to his service, with the chief confirming the renaming of Malaga Park and its associated street in Gonzalez’s honor.
