Danvers School Committee Examines Technology Program and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Danvers School Committee recently held a meeting that delved into the district’s technology program, celebrated student achievements, and tackled financial planning. In addition, the committee recognized student accomplishments and addressed budgetary concerns for the upcoming years.
A central focus of the meeting was the evaluation and future direction of the one-to-one Chromebook initiative. The program, which provides a Chromebook to each student from kindergarten through 12th grade, has been in place for a decade. Discussions revolved around its effectiveness and the potential need for alternative devices to better meet educational objectives, especially for higher grade levels. The committee considered options like a lease-to-own program and a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) approach, weighing the benefits and challenges of each. The importance of aligning technology with the new strategic plan to foster skills like problem-solving and communication was emphasized. Feedback from teachers and families will be sought through surveys and listening groups to guide the future of the technology program.
In terms of student achievements, the committee celebrated Claudia, a senior, for her outstanding academic record and recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Principal Strauss praised her consistent academic excellence, noting her impressive grades and involvement. Additionally, Ala, an eighth-grade student, was honored as the Project 351 ambassador for Holton Richmond, recognizing her leadership qualities. The program, based on Dr. King’s vision, empowers young people through community service. Ala’s selection was supported by positive feedback from teachers.
The meeting also involved a review of the district’s financial planning, focusing on the FY26 operating budget and transportation services. It was noted that nearly $300,000 had been pursued in non-entitlement grants to support the budget. The committee discussed challenges related to out-of-district tuition costs and the impact of a $130,000 reduction in the IDEA grant. Efforts are being made to improve data accuracy to address funding discrepancies. Transportation services, both in-district and out-of-district, were reviewed, with a focus on efficiency and potential savings.
Equity in education was another significant topic, with ongoing efforts to integrate culturally relevant teaching practices. The assistant superintendent shared updates on the district’s strategic plan, emphasizing the importance of high expectations for all students and engaging their cultural knowledge and experiences.
The committee also addressed policy updates, including revisions related to bullying and harassment, and the introduction of a new policy on access to buildings and grounds to enhance safety. The meeting concluded with a discussion on fee reviews for special education, transportation, athletics, and Chromebook insurance.
