DeFuniak Springs City Council Tackles Uplighting, Tree Projects, and Community Grants
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the DeFuniak Springs City Council addressed a variety of community projects and infrastructural updates, with focus on the uplighting of trees in Chipley Park, the procurement of Japanese maples, and the grant processes for community landscaping projects.
The council spent considerable time deliberating on the potential for uplighting trees within Chipley Park, emphasizing the need to maintain a consistent aesthetic across all lighting installations. The project aims to utilize eight lights from the Christmas Reflections display for year-round use, contingent upon the availability of funds. A member of the council clarified the budgetary process, noting that the city’s $5,000 contribution would hinge on matching donations, although this sparked some confusion among members about the nature of the matching funds. The council agreed that a pricing inquiry should be conducted, with future discussions planned to finalize the details of the uplighting initiative. This project also opened up potential for memorialization, with suggestions that community members could sponsor trees or lighting in honor of individuals, though a formal policy for such memorials is still in the works.
In conjunction with the uplighting agenda, the council discussed the acquisition of Japanese maples to enhance local greenery. The decision to purchase two seven-gallon Japanese maples was made, with a budget cap of $300. The trees are to be sourced from local suppliers, with an emphasis on securing the best possible price.
The meeting also covered several infrastructural updates, including ongoing discussions with Florida Power & Light (FPL) regarding tree-related lighting issues. It was revealed that a particular light had been dysfunctional for two years due to storm damage, prompting a debate over whether to pursue underground wiring or trim obstructing trees. The council expressed a preference for underground solutions, despite the higher cost, due to their resilience against storms.
In addition to the above, the council reviewed the fencing project in Florence Park, where bids have been received for the installation of aluminum rod iron fencing. The project aims to extend the parking lot and improve ADA accessibility. The removal of a lumen tower also featured in the discussions, with plans for a mural project to commemorate the event.
The council’s agenda further included a focus on landscaping along Highway 90, with a grant application in progress to revamp the medians. Emphasis was placed on selecting non-invasive plant species and ensuring tree canopies meet height requirements. The recent departure of the city’s grant coordinator raised concerns about the continuity of the grant application process, prompting discussions about temporary solutions or hiring an ad hoc grant writer. There was also talk of collaborating with the county.
Citizen engagement was also a key theme, with Dan Owens from the Rotary Club of DeFuniak Springs emphasizing the importance of publicizing community initiatives. He highlighted a grant aimed at planting trees along Main Street and proposed a fountain project in the lake area, estimated to cost several hundred thousand dollars. The council expressed gratitude for the Rotary’s contributions and discussed strategies for improving publicity, including leveraging local media to boost community involvement.
