- Meeting Overview:
In an effort to protect the community from flooding, the Delanco Town Council approved the construction of a new seawall, as well as discussing a range of other issues, including affordable housing, public safety, and infrastructure upgrades. The meeting, which was live streamed on YouTube, saw the Council navigate through several ordinances and resident concerns.
The new seawall project was a focal point of the meeting, with the town’s engineer providing an update on its progress. It was revealed that construction had begun and, as a result, the adjacent park would be temporarily closed to the public. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance flood damage prevention, a issue for the riverside community.
Resident engagement surfaced as a key element of the meeting, with public comments prompting the Council to consider the implications of affordable housing development on local recreational spaces. A resident raised questions regarding the potential use of the Walnut Street School field for affordable housing. They pointed out that land designated for active recreation in the municipal master plan might be exempt from such development. The resident’s concerns were acknowledged, and the township solicitor was instructed to look into the matter, underlining the Council’s responsiveness to public input.
In addition to flood prevention and land use, the Council also addressed the need for improved lighting at local fields. Plans were discussed to purchase lights and related equipment through a cooperative program, with installation slated for July. This initiative is set to enhance the usability and safety of these community spaces. Further discussions on infrastructure included the proposal to upgrade the software for the assessor’s office, with the Council authorizing additional funds for the 2024 term to support this modernization.
Public safety and community welfare were also at the forefront of the discussions. The Chief of Police provided an overview of recent statistics, emphasizing the department’s focus on community events and a wellness program. Public Works reported on their activities, including maintenance and repairs, and highlighted the need for new flags across the town.
Infrastructure upgrades continued to feature prominently in the meeting’s agenda. The Council was reminded of the Capital ordinance for road work and urged to progress with the bond ordinance for various projects. The acquisition of a paint lining machine for street and field line painting was mentioned, along with staff training to operate it.
Community events and preparations for larger gatherings were discussed, with the aim of ensuring public safety and preventing incidents. This was indicative of the Council’s broader concerns about community welfare and the importance of planning and management in facilitating successful public events.
The meeting also touched upon a request from a commercial property owner for a revision of rental registration fees. Additionally, a resident brought to the Council’s attention the ongoing work by the county along Pennington and issues related to motorbikes and ATVs on the path, which the Council took under advisement.
A proposed cannabis ordinance was a topic of debate, but the Council decided to table the discussion until the next meeting to allow for full committee participation.
In closing the meeting, the Council approved the consent agenda, which included multiple ordinances, resolutions, and the approval of minutes from previous meetings.
