Delanco Council Secures $175,000 Grant for New Playground at Babe Ruth Field
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Delanco Town Council meeting was highlighted by the announcement of a $175,000 grant from the Burlington County Commissioners, earmarked for the construction of a new playground at the Babe Ruth field. This initiative will feature a baseball-themed playground to benefit local children. Alongside this, the council discussed several ongoing projects and community activities.
The grant for the Babe Ruth field playground was a focal point of the meeting. The planned playground aims to offer a baseball-themed environment, aligning with the field’s sporting heritage and providing a new space for children to enjoy. This development is part of a broader effort by the council to enhance community amenities and support family-friendly environments throughout Delanco.
In other developments, the council marked the completion of work on Burlington Avenue near the bridge, with repaving scheduled for early spring. This infrastructure improvement is expected to ease transportation in the area, contributing to the town’s ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade local roads.
A notable milestone discussed was the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly named Historic Waterfront Park, previously known as Zurbrook Park. This event marked the culmination of 18 years of planning and development. The park is expected to serve as a focal point for community events and gatherings, further enriching the town’s cultural and social landscape.
The council also addressed operational aspects, such as the need for coaches and volunteers for the upcoming Del Riv soccer season. In response to maintenance concerns, the council reviewed requests for tree removals across several properties, ultimately deciding not to remove trees on Emory Way and Laurel Street, but to add the latter to a priority list for pruning. Dead trees on Burlington Avenue and Union Avenue will be removed.
Further discussions during the meeting included a subcommittee’s work on establishing fees and usage guidelines for the waterfront and Gateway Parks, alongside maintenance plans for the Field of Dreams. A concert featuring the band Poor Mount Henry was scheduled to take place at the waterfront park.
The township auditor’s exit audit revealed no discrepancies or recommendations, a positive assessment that was well-received by the council. This financial oversight ensures transparency and accountability in the township’s operations. Additionally, a $100,000 grant from Senator Singleton was announced, designated for repairs and replacements to the parking lot at Pearson School, highlighting continued investment in local educational infrastructure.
In community-related updates, the council recognized the achievements of Lucas Russell, an Eagle Scout, reflecting pride in the local scouting program’s success. The National Night Out event was also praised for its organization and strong attendance, with positive feedback from residents reinforcing the event’s role in fostering community spirit.
The council handled various consent agenda items efficiently, including an ordinance reading for an amendment to the industrial rehabilitation areas redevelopment plan and several cooperative agreements and facility rentals.
The meeting included a public comment section where council members addressed property maintenance issues at a local solar project, noting potential legal action in municipal court. However, there was optimism regarding the resolution of maintenance bond issues related to John Meyer Way, with expectations for a final resolution by the next meeting.
