Delanco Town Council Discusses Road Safety Concerns and Compliance with Affordable Housing
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Delanco Town Council meeting, residents voiced concerns over local road safety, the township administrator provided updates on several significant projects, and a positive report was delivered on affordable housing compliance. The council also addressed budgetary matters, including leaf collection and police department updates.
The meeting opened with a public comment session where Ray Weber, representing the Newton’s Landing Homeowners Association, highlighted ongoing traffic safety issues at the intersection of Newton’s Landing and Emory. Weber urged the township committee and the acting police chief to attend a meeting on February 13 to address these concerns directly with residents. The intersection has witnessed numerous accidents and near misses, attributed to problematic signage and driver behavior. Weber’s request underscored the community’s desire for improved communication and prompt action to enhance local safety measures.
Following these public concerns, the township administrator provided updates on several key projects. The 2024 Local Aid Road Program is advancing through its design phase, with completion anticipated soon. This initiative is important for maintaining and improving the town’s infrastructure. Additionally, the Zubro Waterfront Park design is progressing, with an award date for the project set for March 3. The township has also completed plans for the 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), focusing primarily on compliance with regulations, which have been sent to the county for review.
The township solicitor reported on Delanco’s affordable housing compliance, highlighting that the town will meet its fourth-round obligations without needing to construct new units. This achievement, described as “very unique,” results from the governing body’s diligent efforts. Delanco will carry surplus credits into the next compliance round. A resolution to officially acknowledge and address these obligations will be presented at the next meeting.
In budgetary discussions, the township administrator outlined the 2025 budget process. A budget meeting is scheduled for January 28, where proposals from the police department and public works will be reviewed. The emphasis is on thorough planning and collaboration among township officials to ensure comprehensive budget proposals.
Department heads provided updates on their respective areas, focusing on recent activities and achievements. The Public Works department reported an increase in leaf collection, totaling 1,760 cubic yards for the year. Bob, a team member, managed 39 loads in the sweeper, contributing to a total of 273 cubic yards. The department also addressed road maintenance following a recent snowstorm, deploying 24 tons of salt. The supplier, Morton Salt Company, charges $1,569 for 25 tons.
The acting police chief reported on the police department’s activities, including handling 221 police cases, issuing 659 motor vehicle violations, and conducting 1,425 motor vehicle stops. The department also managed 11,395 calls for service. The recruitment of two new officers, already certified and employed with other agencies, is underway, with the background process expected to conclude by late January or early February.
The council addressed several routine consent agenda items, including upcoming ordinances and changes to the local pet ordinance. The revised pet ordinance now allows residents to keep up to four cats or dogs, streamlining previous regulations. Additionally, the council discussed the scheduling of the 2025 primary elections, moved to June 10, affecting previously scheduled meetings. Consensus was reached to adjust meeting dates to June 2 and June 23 to accommodate election setup requirements.
