Delanco Town Council Honors Long-Serving Clerk, Janice Lur, as She Retires After 33 Years
- Meeting Overview:
The Delanco Town Council meeting on December 1st was marked by a tribute to Janice Lur, the retiring municipal clerk, who was honored for her 33 years of service to the township. The council also addressed other matters, including a tabled library agreement and the introduction of newly elected student leaders assuming symbolic roles in the council.
The meeting commenced with a special presentation to honor Janice Lur, who will retire at the end of the year. A proclamation was read in her honor, highlighting her extensive contributions since her employment began on April 1, 1993. Janice has been instrumental in roles related to administration, elections, and employee onboarding over the years. Various council members and officials took the opportunity to express their gratitude, sharing personal anecdotes about her professionalism and support. One council member acknowledged her as a steady guide through multiple administrations, emphasizing the respect she commanded. Janice herself expressed appreciation for the kind words and cherished experiences, noting that this meeting would be her last official appearance before her retirement.
The council also considered a library agreement on the agenda. The township solicitor informed the council of a request from attorney Brandon Croker to carry the action on the library matter to the December 22nd meeting. A resolution, 2025-160, related to the library space agreement with the Board of Education was tabled after a roll call vote confirmed unanimous consent to defer the decision. Public comments revealed concerns about the agreement’s implications, particularly those voiced by David Sudter, who argued that the township’s negotiating stance was weakened and that the school district might gain control of the library. Sudter’s concerns underscored the ongoing community interest in the library’s future.
The meeting also celebrated civic engagement among Delanco’s youth with the introduction of student election winners. These students were to assume leadership roles such as mayor and deputy mayor. This program, initiated by the Delanco Women’s Civic Club in 2006 and paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, symbolizes the community’s dedication to fostering civic responsibility among young residents.
Student committee members shared their ambitions and experiences during the meeting. The young leaders voiced their intentions to engage with community issues and maintain Delanco’s traditions. Mayor Lucas Varga, for instance, committed to attending Board of Education meetings to support diverse student opinions, while Deputy Mayor Felicia Loftess spoke of preserving the town’s history and ensuring a clean and safe environment. Environmental and animal welfare were among the priorities highlighted by other student members, who expressed plans for community clean-ups and support for animal care initiatives.
The council received updates on infrastructure projects from Mr. Fox, who reported progress on Delanco’s road program. Delaware Avenue’s construction was near completion, with minor tasks pending. Fox proposed bifurcating bonds to incentivize timely completion of necessary roadway work. In addition, a handicap ramp at Hickory and Walnut had been repaired, addressing community concerns.
Affordable housing was another topic of discussion, as Mr. Heinald reported on meetings with planners to discuss technical requirements for certification. He confirmed that existing units would be extended rather than new ones built, with further updates promised as necessary steps are taken.
The meeting also acknowledged the success of community initiatives, including a canned food drive organized by the police department, which collected a record number of donations for local families. The Delanco Women’s Civic Club received recognition for its contributions to Thanksgiving dinners and holiday assistance.
