Delanco Town Council Welcomes New Police Chief and Honors Officer of the Year
- Meeting Overview:
The Delanco Town Council meeting was highlighted by the induction of Chief Waring, the presentation of the Lawrence D. Sterns Officer of the Year Award to Patrolman Jacob Lner, and updates on several infrastructure projects.
The event was marked by applause from both council members and attendees.
In a ceremony that followed, the annual Lawrence D. Sterns Officer of the Year Award was bestowed upon Patrolman Jacob Lner. His exemplary performance was commended by a council member, who noted Lner’s perfect attendance and leadership in departmental statistics. The award presentation was met with widespread applause.
The council meeting also served as a platform for updates on significant infrastructure projects. The Township Engineer reported progress on a series of initiatives, including the 2024 local aid project concerning Hickory and Chestnut streets, which is set to go out to bid soon with paving anticipated in the spring. Additionally, the 2024 Community Development Block Grant project focuses on replacing handicap ramps, with construction slated to begin in early April.
Attention was drawn to the Zub Waterfront Park project, which is currently out to bid, with construction expected to commence in April and a completion date set for June 27.
Further, the Township Solicitor addressed the ongoing acquisition of the 401 Creek Road property, confirming the township’s contract status and aiming for a closing date of June 10. This acquisition involves careful due diligence, with engineering and title issues being collaboratively resolved with the seller’s counsel. The Township Administrator highlighted the introduction of a bond ordinance at the next meeting to secure funds for the property closing, alongside upcoming bids for electrical work to be received by April 1.
During the meeting, the council deliberated on energy rates offered by Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG), noting that the statewide energy bid was not more advantageous than PSEG’s current offerings. The council’s efforts have effectively shielded residents from a potential 15% increase in energy costs.
Maintenance and public works updates were also discussed, with reports of various tasks being completed, such as pothole patching, sign reinstallation at Newton’s Landing, tree removal on West Avenue, and storm drain cleaning. These efforts aim to maintain infrastructure integrity and enhance safety. Notably, a water line explosion incident was reported, raising concerns about potential damage to a nearby force main. The council emphasized the importance of timely inspections and response measures to prevent further issues.
The council also addressed storm drain damage caused by construction equipment at Newton’s Landing, highlighting the need for compliance with stormwater management standards. Proposals for necessary repairs will require council approval to ensure appropriate oversight and prevent further damage.
In a move to foster community identity, a council member presented a preliminary design for a new township seal. The design incorporates elements of local wildlife, tree city status, and geographical features, with a graphic artist enlisted to refine the concept. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the township’s aesthetic appeal and public spaces.
As the meeting drew to a close, plans were made to transition into budget preparation discussions in a more private setting, allowing for a concentrated review of financial documents. The council expressed a determination to finalize budget numbers and minimize tax increases for residents, with members invited to participate in this crucial process.
