Delano Public Schools Unveils Strategic Plan and New Math Curriculum in Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Delano Public School Board meeting primarily focused on the unveiling of a comprehensive strategic plan and the adoption of a new K-12 math curriculum. Other discussions included enrollment updates, new staff introductions, and upcoming school year preparations.
During the meeting, Superintendent Matthew W. Schoen presented an extensive update on the district’s strategic plan, emphasizing the core purpose of empowering every learner to achieve their highest potential through academic excellence and quality opportunities. The strategic vision outlined by Schoen focused on five main points: comprehensive educational programs, safe and supportive environments, exceptional staffing, responsible resource management, and community partnerships. These components aim to guide the district’s actions and decisions, aligning with core values such as excellence, teamwork, belonging, and grit.
Schoen detailed the desired daily experiences (DDE) for students, staff, and families, highlighting the importance of collaboration, support, and tailored educational approaches. Students are expected to rely on adults for help, collaborate with teachers and peers, have individualized learning schedules, and manage personal responsibilities. From the staff’s perspective, a cohesive community, strong administrative support, and access to advanced facilities and technology were emphasized. Families are encouraged to value child safety, recognize unique attributes, support holistic development, and engage in effective communication with the school.
The strategic plan also introduced a theory of action comprising nine guiding statements that stress fostering belonging, engaging in continuous improvement, and valuing innovation. Four strategic directions were outlined: improving student outcomes, fostering belonging and equity, supporting professional growth, and implementing long-term facility planning. Schoen highlighted the importance of student-centered education, stating, “When we engage students in relevant, authentic learning experiences that develop critical thinking and communication skills, that means we’re on the right track with our initiatives.”
The meeting also saw the approval of a new K-12 math curriculum. This decision follows the previous use of Everyday Math and aims to align with modern educational standards. The new curriculum, Reveal Math, will be implemented in the upcoming academic year, as discussed by various school principals during their reports.
In addition to curriculum updates, the meeting addressed enrollment changes and school preparations. The district welcomed 45 new students, attributed primarily to new residents, following the closure of open enrollment. The elementary school reported successful summer activities and the introduction of “Popsicles with the Principals,” which fostered community engagement despite inclement weather. Meanwhile, the high school celebrated its recognition by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s best, ranking 59th in Minnesota. New staff members were welcomed, and initiatives such as the “Tiger Tracks” induction program for new students were introduced.
The intermediate school highlighted its increased enrollment, with a notable rise in fourth-grade students leading to the hiring of an additional teacher. The school plans to implement a new monthly “Tiger Time” initiative to promote student interaction across different grade levels.
Financial reports for July were presented, noting that salaries and benefits appeared low due to accounting practices from the previous fiscal year. The business office reported significant payments made to a special education co-op to address cash flow requirements.
The community education segment of the meeting celebrated the conclusion of the Tiger Kids Club summer program and discussed upcoming programs such as the Early Childhood Family Education (ECF) and Target Tiger Kids Club. Preschool enrollment figures were noted to be lower than desired, attributed to potential competition and parental choices. However, the Tiger Kids Club reported over 200 enrollments, though staffing challenges persist.
