Delano School Board Explores AI Policy and Expands College-Level Courses
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Delano Public School Board meeting covered a range of topics, with the exploration of a district-wide artificial intelligence (AI) policy and the expansion of college-level courses emerging as key points of interest. The board also discussed strategic plans, staff development, and community engagement activities.
A major focus of the meeting was the development of an AI policy and strategies for integration within the district. Recognizing the increasing importance of AI in education and future careers, the board discussed a partnership with Groovy Education to provide professional development for educators. This initiative aims to enhance teachers’ understanding of AI and explore its applications in the classroom. While the district currently lacks a formal AI policy, there is a clear consensus on the need to nurture students’ appropriate use of AI. An ad hoc committee has been formed to research existing AI policies and cutting-edge strategies, with Jason Monkey facilitating this effort. The board aims to ensure that both educators and students are well-prepared for the technological advancements that AI brings.
In addition to AI discussions, the board addressed the availability and expansion of college-level courses at the high school. All previously offered courses remain available, with additional sections introduced, particularly in algebra and sociology. The Spanish department also expanded its offerings, allowing students to earn more credits.
Another agenda item was the continuous improvement plan, which aligns with the district’s strategic goals. The plan emphasizes creating a safe and welcoming environment, challenging students rigorously, and supporting individual needs. The board highlighted the importance of data-driven instructional practices and special education processes, with a commitment to using student performance data to inform decisions. This approach aims to meet the diverse needs of students effectively.
The meeting also focused on the evaluation and development of head coaches within the district. There is an ongoing effort to create a cohesive and consistent approach to coaching practices, mirroring the support systems in place for teachers.
Board discussions extended to updates on the school calendar and the potential for starting the academic year earlier than in the past. The legislative provision allows the school year to begin on September 1st, prompting a recommendation to involve students and parents in surveys to gather feedback on the school year timeline.
The board acknowledged the contributions from various organizations, including a $44 donation from the Charities Aid Foundation for Delano Elementary and a $2,500 contribution from the Delano Education Foundation for an intermediate school step program. These gifts reflect strong community support for the district’s educational initiatives.
In administrative reports, updates were provided on the community education building and ongoing efforts to collaborate with the city. A meeting with the city administrator discussed future collaboration between the city and the district. Efforts to enhance staff connections and support were also highlighted, with an emphasis on fostering an environment of curiosity and innovation. Bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with coordinators aim to build relationships and support new staff members acclimating to the district.
The meeting concluded with discussions on policy reviews, including unpaid meal charges, student achievement assessment, and literacy and reading acts. Each policy was approved individually without public comments. A new conflict of interest policy for school board members was presented for a first read, and plans were made for the approval of the 2025-2026 property tax levy, with a truth and taxation meeting scheduled for December 15th.
