- Meeting Overview:
The recent Delsea School Board meeting featured the introduction of a new vice principal for the high school and a review of preliminary NJ8 results, highlighting efforts to address academic performance and graduation requirements.
The most newsworthy moment of the meeting was the introduction of Jess Cardella as the new vice principal of Delsea High School. Cardella brings a wealth of experience, having taught Spanish for 15 years, including three years in Honduras. She has also been involved in philanthropic activities, notably organizing stand-up comedy fundraisers to support the schools in Honduras where she previously worked. Cardella expressed her excitement about joining the Delsea community, stating, “I’m really excited for this opportunity. I hear great things about Delsea, and so far, everyone I’ve worked with has been incredibly welcoming.”
The meeting also included a detailed presentation of the NJ8 results, which are part of the graduation assessment requirements. The board reviewed the preliminary results, noting that the English Language Arts (ELA) pass rate was 71%, while mathematics lagged at 40.7%, below the state average. However, the board emphasized ongoing efforts to improve these scores. They have restructured the mathematics curriculum to ensure students receive a full year of Algebra and Geometry before taking the assessment. The board reassured that students at risk of not meeting graduation requirements are given multiple options to succeed, including a portfolio course and a summer institute.
In addition, the board discussed the performance of various student subgroups, noting that students with disabilities performed on par with their peers. Economic disadvantage metrics were also reviewed, although there was some skepticism about the accuracy of these numbers due to changes in the definition of free and reduced lunch eligibility.
A representative from New Jersey Statewide Student Support Services (NJ4S) also addressed the board, offering professional development, mental health counseling, crisis intervention, and anti-bullying initiatives for the upcoming year. They expressed their eagerness to collaborate with the district again, following successful teacher appreciation events last year.
Routine administrative matters were also handled, including the approval of resignations, retirements, and professional development opportunities for staff. Several motions were passed regarding staff assignments, professional development funding, and the allocation of grants for educational programs.
Finally, during the public comment section, a citizen inquired about the possible consolidation of schools, to which the board responded that there is no update at this time, but further discussions and public information sessions will be forthcoming.
The meeting concluded with the board approving various financial reports, field trips, and emergency virtual instruction plans.
