- Meeting Overview:
The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee has voted on changes to the school calendar for the 2025-2026 academic year, amid a series of discussions on topics ranging from transportation to school safety and the financial state of the district. The meeting saw the passage of a motion to designate November 27th and April 18th as half days, the latter being Good Friday, with a majority vote of three to two.
The committee debated adjustments to the early release schedule, proposing early release days on the first Wednesdays of the month from October to May, except for December and June. The change is aimed at maximizing instructional time while considering students’ learning patterns. Additionally, starting the academic year earlier in August was suggested to align with students’ readiness to return to school, although concerns were raised about the impact of hot weather on students in older, non-air-conditioned school buildings.
The committee also grappled with the historical practice of beginning the school year after Labor Day. While some members stressed the importance of tradition, others focused on the educational objectives that might be better served by adjusting the calendar.
Transportation was another issue, with a proposal to change the bus system from a three-tier to a two-tier system being rejected due to the need for additional buses and staff. Instead, substantial changes to the current three-tier system’s routing were discussed, with the aim of making it more efficient by using cluster stops along major roads rather than door-to-door service. Safety concerns associated with stopping buses on busy roads were voiced, as was the need for clear communication with parents to ensure the safety of children at bus stops. Further discussion on this topic was postponed.
Financial matters were also on the agenda, with an end-of-year report revealing that the district’s revenue is projected to be approximately $900,000 higher than anticipated. This positive financial outlook was tempered by concerns raised over the percentage of Regional Transportation money and a decrease in charter school aid. The committee emphasized the uncertainty of state funding and the importance of maintaining clear lines of communication with town representatives to address these issues.
At the meeting, the need for a designated liaison between the school committee and the town of Yarmouth was highlighted. Furthermore, the committee approved a recommendation to maintain the interest earnings from the Dy IMS construction project within the project fund, with the intent to offset the amount to be financed upon completion.
