- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Denville School Board recognized two community heroes for their service and delved into a review of the district’s communication systems, aimed at streamlining information dissemination and enhancing user experience. The meeting also touched on various other topics, including technology management, policy revisions, and upcoming school board elections.
Officer John Kerr and Tim, an attorney, were honored with the Person of the Year Awards for their contributions to the Denville community. Officer Kerr has dedicated 25 years to law enforcement and now serves within the Denville schools, while Tim has supported the mock trial club for 15 years and facilitated a generous donation. The board presented the awardees with tokens of appreciation.
The focal point of the meeting was the presentation of the final report by the District Communications committee, led by Sue Marinello, a communications consultant. The committee was tasked with enhancing the district’s communication methods and conducted a survey, which received 286 responses from parents and faculty. The survey found that the majority, 85%, rated current communications as effective or very effective.
Despite positive feedback, the committee identified key areas for improvement. The district’s website and app were criticized for being confusing and difficult to navigate, prompting recommendations for a more streamlined and user-friendly approach. The committee advised consolidating information sources, standardizing communication options, and selecting platforms that are easy to use and consistent throughout the district.
The survey unexpectedly highlighted the potential benefits of implementing a learning management system, with the committee recommending further evaluation and faculty consultation to identify the most suitable platform for the district. The School Messenger alerts were noted for their high usage and preference among community members, while the reception of phone call alerts was mixed.
The meeting also discussed the district’s social media presence, with suggestions to work closely with the PTA to share and amplify district information. The aim is to centralize email procedures, rethink social media strategies, and adhere to the one-click rule for maximum efficiency.
Attention was given to the technology management within the district, including the evaluation of existing platforms and the associated costs of managing hardware and software. The board recognized the need for a strategic plan for technology and set goals for implementing changes in the coming years.
The superintendent provided updates on various school events and activities, including the retirement of a superintendent and the upcoming graduations and end of the school year. The business administrator highlighted two openings for the Board election and the application deadline.
The board went on to approve various items under old business, including contracts, programs, workshops, and policy revisions. These covered areas such as equity in education, sportsmanship, and education policies. In finance, approvals included professional services, special education, and a donation to the Valley View Middle School Mock Trial Club. Operations approvals encompassed environmental compliance, lead and water testing, and landscape maintenance services.
The board also discussed the creation of a technology ad hoc committee to address software and website redesign needs. Policy considerations regarding communication and social media usage by staff were mentioned, as well as support for a resolution on virtual learning as an alternative to school closures during emergencies.
In closing, the board moved to convene an executive session to discuss negotiations, legal matters, security, and personnel issues, with no public comments made during the meeting.
