Dighton Board of Selectmen Discusses Disability Parking Enforcement and Accessibility Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Dighton Board of Selectmen meeting, members discussed the potential introduction of a ticketing system for vehicles improperly parked in disability spots. This initiative is considered as a possible way to generate funds for the Commission on Disability (COD) while addressing the misuse of designated parking areas in town.
The discussion around implementing a ticketing system was spurred by concerns over the deliberate misuse of disability parking spots, including by some town officials. The proposed system would initially issue warning notices or “fake tickets” as an educational measure, followed by actual tickets enforced by the police department for repeat offenders. This dual approach aims to ensure compliance and respect for designated parking spaces, which are limited in number across Dighton. The board expressed interest in exploring this initiative further in future meetings.
In addition to the parking enforcement discussion, the meeting addressed the completion of an accessibility project concerning the installation of a threshold at the town hall. Although the threshold installation was executed without direct involvement from the commission, it met compliance standards. Members expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the threshold’s compliance would enhance wheelchair accessibility, albeit with minor critiques regarding its design.
Further deliberations included the ongoing efforts to improve accessibility in public facilities like the library, where some modifications remain pending. Members highlighted the need for continued focus on the town’s accessibility goals as outlined in the KMA report.
