Dighton Board Proposes Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans with Homes in Trusts
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Dighton Board of Assessors discussed a significant proposal aimed at supporting disabled veterans by allowing them to retain property tax exemptions even if their homes are placed in trusts. This measure, if approved at the upcoming town meeting, would amend the local adoption of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 59, Section 5, Clause 22G. The change seeks to ensure that disabled veterans continue to benefit from exemptions under certain conditions, addressing a gap that currently excludes veterans whose properties are in trusts from receiving these benefits.
The proposal, prompted by the recognition that veterans often lose their exemption status upon transferring homes into trusts, aims to rectify this by aligning local practices with state provisions. The board emphasized that this move would allow eligible veterans to file for exemptions in the current fiscal year.
Additionally, the board addressed several financial matters, including the signing of motor vehicle and boat abatements for fiscal years 2023 through 2025, as well as the town’s portion of the Bristol County tax for FY 2026, totaling $118,515.20. It was noted that there might be a financial incentive to pay the county tax in full, as had been the practice in previous years, though this was to be confirmed with town officials.
The board also deferred a discussion on a property discrepancy on Pleasant Street to a future meeting to allow for comprehensive review and input from all relevant parties. Furthermore, the board plans to continue engaging with Dighton Power to resolve ongoing issues, potentially involving legal assistance if necessary.
