- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Dighton Board of Selectmen, the board appointed Barbara Cabia to fill an unexpired term on the Board of Health. The selection process for the Board of Health position was a focal point, with candidates interviewed and a debate among the board members regarding the best fit for the vacancy. The appointment of Cabia followed discussions on the interview questions, the composition of the interview committee, and a point of order raised about the committee’s formation and the lack of publicized information regarding its makeup.
The meeting featured interviews with several candidates vying for a position on the Board of Health. The candidates discussed their qualifications, experiences, and philosophies on leadership and community involvement. One candidate spoke of their experience working with disability issues, emergency preparedness, and the importance of promoting Board of Health services and oversight of the health agent’s activities. Another candidate brought up their 35-year career in healthcare, managing a horse farm, and financial background, while a third candidate highlighted their experience in railroad management and certifications as a certified pool operator and in hazardous material response.
Additionally, the board interviewed candidates for the school building committee. All interviewees, including a retired Director of Park Improvements, a former teacher, a parent with construction knowledge, and a parent with prior experience on the Brockton school committee, were appointed to fill the open positions. The board emphasized the diversity of experiences and the importance of creating environments conducive to children’s success while being mindful of financial constraints.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) initial compliance certification was another key topic. The board approved the certification, which outlined the town and district’s responsibilities during the eligibility period. The need for legal review to protect the town’s interests and clarifications on the town and district’s interrelationship were addressed.
Announcements included the scheduling of the annual town meeting, the upcoming Dighton Strawberry Festival, the town’s food bank distribution, and an invitation to the Memorial Day ceremony. The board also discussed the increase in transfer station sticker fees and rates, changes in debris acceptance, and a blood drive sponsored by the Dighton Health Department and the Police Department. They highlighted vacancies on various town boards and committees and discussed correspondence regarding an at-large position for the Conservation Commission.
The meeting touched on the Pan Mass Challenge, an annual fundraising event for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and public comments praising the diversity of the school building committee. The need to ensure parity between towns in terms of educational opportunities and facilities was stressed.
The board also reviewed, discussed, and approved the June 10th, 2024 annual town meeting warrant, which included 38 warrant articles. The posting and mailing of the warrant to every household were mentioned. Additionally, a facilities request for a boys and girls soccer car wash at the highway garage was approved.
A pilot agreement amendment for a solar farm on William Street was reviewed and approved after discussion on the need for updates to reflect ownership and personnel changes. The proposed renewal of employment for the town assessor was tabled due to concerns about compensation, sick leave, and outdated contract information.
