- Meeting Overview:
The Union Town Council meeting addressed a variety of topics, with a particular focus on public safety, including drone activity and traffic laws, as well as community activities and updates on municipal services. Members of the council discussed recent drone sightings, traffic violations, and the importance of adhering to safety protocols during the holiday season.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to addressing concerns about drone activity in the area. The mayor reported that a recent call with agencies including the FBI and FAA had determined most drone sightings were linked to lawful activities. He cautioned residents against aiming lasers at drones, emphasizing that such actions are a federal offense, and reassured the community that there was no threat to local security from these incidents. This update comes amidst rising interest in drone technology and its implications for privacy and safety.
Traffic safety was another key focus. The mayor highlighted that none of the 23 red light summons issued were to local residents. However, he urged continued vigilance, especially during the busy holiday period.
The fire department reported responding to 349 emergency calls over two weeks, including several significant fires. A garage fire on Andover Road was contained, preventing displacement of the homeowners, while a house fire on Ray Avenue was limited to the garage area. The fire commissioner took this opportunity to remind residents to install smoke alarms on every floor, test them regularly, and develop a fire escape plan. These safety messages are particularly pertinent during the holiday season when fire risks increase due to decorations and heating equipment.
The senior center’s activities were another highlight of the meeting. The center recently hosted a holiday party attended by 165 seniors at the Galloping Hill venue, featuring intergenerational engagement with students from the Union High School cosmetology department. This event exemplifies the center’s role in fostering community bonds and providing valuable services to seniors. The report also noted that 36,000 residents had utilized the center’s services, with over 7,000 seniors benefiting from its transportation offerings. Upcoming activities include health and wellness events such as Zumba Gold sessions and water aerobics.
In financial matters, the council approved several resolutions and ordinances without public opposition. These included amending municipal codes related to specific uses and massage services, extending agreements for construction code duties and printing services, and authorizing leases for police vehicles. Additionally, the council approved change orders for construction projects, including an increase for Green Lane improvements and a decrease for Rapkin Park field improvements. These approvals reflect the council’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and maintain infrastructure.
Committee reports provided insights into the Department of Public Works’ activities, with updates on road and sewer maintenance. The department performed 38 pothole repairs, swept 334 streets, and conducted 218 catch basin cleanings. Tree maintenance efforts were also highlighted, including removals and trimming. These activities demonstrate the department’s dedication to maintaining the town’s infrastructure and ensuring public safety.
The police department’s report detailed their efforts during a period of heightened activity, including 1,147 direct patrols and 94 arrests. A notable incident involved a high-speed pursuit following a suspected residential burglary, resulting in the apprehension of three suspects.
Community events were also a topic of discussion, with the council encouraging participation in upcoming celebrations such as a Winter Wonderland and a Kwanzaa event. The mayor expressed gratitude to those involved in organizing these events and emphasized their importance in fostering community spirit.
The meeting concluded with the mayor extending holiday greetings to residents and opening the floor for public comments, though no individuals came forward to speak.
