- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Dunedin City Commission meeting, the Commission approved the Historic Landmark designation for two significant properties. The properties on Edgewater Drive and W Wilkey Street were the focal points of the meeting, receiving the Historic Landmark status after the second readings of ordinances 24-16 and 24-17, respectively.
The property on Edgewater Drive, often referred to as King’s Corner, was acknowledged for its historical and cultural significance, architectural features, and its structural integrity. The Commission recognized this commitment, with one Commissioner sharing her own experiences with historic preservation and commending the Kines for their efforts.
Similarly, the property on W Wilkey Street was presented for its historical value, having belonged to Dr. Me, who established the Dunedin hospital in 1937. Built in 1925, this Craftsman-style home reflects an important era in Dunedin’s development. The current owners articulated their pride in the property’s renovation and the importance of maintaining its historical character, which the Commission unanimously supported through the approval of its Historic Landmark designation.
The meeting also addressed proposed amendments to the city Charter aimed at updating language to be more inclusive and correcting grammatical inaccuracies through the second readings of ordinances 24-18 to 24-21. These amendments included changes to recognize both genders, replace the term “voters” with “electors,” and revise section 3.01 of the city Charter. The proposed changes were slated for a referendum election.
Additionally, the Commission recognized Purple Heart recognition day, designated on Wednesday, August 7th, 2024. A Proclamation honored American veterans, calling upon the city to celebrate and honor the sacrifices of military personnel. Dwayne Wright spoke during citizen input.
The forthcoming agenda for the August 8th city commission meeting was briefly mentioned, with the acknowledgement that the city manager and two commissioners would be out of the country. A reminder was also issued concerning the qualifying period for the November 5th election, and upcoming special meetings were announced to discuss noise and outdoor dining ordinances.
