Dunellen Council Approves $1.1 Million Bond for New Municipal Parking Lot
- Meeting Overview:
The Dunellen Borough Council meeting on November 17, 2025, was marked by developments, including the approval of a $1.1 million bond ordinance for the acquisition of property on North Washington Avenue, intended to serve as a municipal parking lot and potentially house municipal facilities. The council also addressed various community projects, health services, and redevelopment plans.
The council’s most critical action was the introduction of Ordinance 2025-20, a bond ordinance for the acquisition of the former Investors Bank property. This ordinance allows for an appropriation of $1.1 million, with $145,000 to be issued in bonds. The property, located on North Washington Avenue, is slated to become a municipal parking lot.
In addition to the ordinance, the council considered several resolutions, with Resolution 382 being particularly noteworthy. It authorized a public health services contract with Middlesex County, extending the shared service agreement. During the discussion, Patricia Clemente from Middlesex County’s Department of Health received commendations for her diligent inspections and timely reports, with council members unanimously approving the resolution.
The meeting also focused on redevelopment initiatives, as evidenced by the approval of resolutions 384 and 385. These resolutions named conditional redevelopers for properties in designated redevelopment zones. The first involved a former laundromat at the corner of Sanford and Bound Brook Road, allowing a developer to propose a project aligned with the borough’s redevelopment plans. The second resolution pertained to improvements on North Washington Avenue, including facade enhancements and additional living spaces. Both resolutions were approved unanimously.
Infrastructure improvements were another key topic, with updates provided on ongoing projects by New Jersey American Water. The company is nearing completion of its 2025 projects, which include tying in new water mains at several intersections and finishing the last service connections. Plans for the 2026 project were also discussed, particularly the replacement of water mains along Fairview Avenue and parts of Second Street. This work is set to conclude by the end of March, preceding the Second Street Phase 2 DOT project, which will involve replacing damaged curbs, sidewalks, and enhancing stormwater management.
The council also emphasized the importance of the Washington Avenue beautification project, which commenced on the date of the meeting. This initiative includes installing new LED decorative lights and various enhancements to the sidewalks and tree work along Washington Avenue. Funded through a grant, the project aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area.
Notably, U.S. Senator Andy Kim visited Dunellen, engaging with local businesses during a small business walk along North Avenue. The senator’s visit included discussions related to the Raritan Valley Line Mayors Alliance, focusing on the local economy and the need for upgrades to the Dunellen train station. Senator Kim toured the train station, discussing the urgency of securing funding for necessary improvements, thereby reinforcing the importance of bipartisan action to support the community’s needs.
During the public comments section, resident Tony Faber addressed the council, urging them to pass a resolution in support of the Immigrant Trust Act, under consideration in the New Jersey Assembly and Senate. Faber argued that the act would prevent local governments from cooperating with federal immigration authorities, fostering community trust and safety. He highlighted recent aggressive actions by federal agents, leading to the detention of individuals mostly legally present, and emphasized that cooperation between local police and immigration authorities erodes community trust, discouraging individuals from seeking help from law enforcement when necessary.
The meeting concluded with council members providing updates on various community activities. Notable mentions included the public works department’s preparations for holiday decorations and ongoing sewer system maintenance. Additionally, upcoming community events such as the annual Bags and Bling sale at the library, the recreational department’s basketball registration, and the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony were promoted.
