Dunellen Council Seeks $2.5 Million for Library Renovation and Addresses Infrastructure Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
During the Dunellen Borough Council meeting on March 16, 2026, discussions centered on securing federal funding for the renovation and modernization of the Arnold A. Schwarz Memorial Library and the advancement of several infrastructure projects.
The council deliberated on Resolution 117. This initiative, backed by local congressional representatives, was met with enthusiasm from council members and the library’s administration. The proposed improvements are expected to enhance the facility’s capacity to serve the community, with hopes pinned on favorable congressional action.
In parallel, the council discussed numerous infrastructure projects critical to Dunellen’s development. The completion of the Second Street water main project by New Jersey American Water and the forthcoming work on Fair View Avenue and Orange Street were noted as significant investments in the borough’s aging infrastructure. The water main replacements, which address pipes over 80 years old, have involved over $20 million in improvements. Following the completion of these projects, the borough plans to repave affected roads, with a total of 80% of municipal roads expected to be resurfaced.
Further infrastructure developments included updates on the Washington Avenue street light project, which introduced new decorative lighting and planned tree planting and area restoration. A capital project for additional decorative lighting from Madison to Middlesex was also discussed, with design standards being developed to accommodate parking lot considerations. The Second Street phase 2 project, bolstered by a $496,000 NJ DOT grant, included stormwater system enhancements and curb restoration.
The council also addressed traffic signal enhancements at key intersections, with plans for full pedestrian phases and prohibiting right turns on red to improve safety. This initiative, involving intersections at South Washington Avenue and Orange Street, and New Market Road and Grove Street, is expected to conclude before road repaving begins. Additionally, PSEG’s street light LED upgrades were mentioned.
Community safety and preparedness were further emphasized with updates on the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which had logged over 317 hours in activation and training. The CERT’s efforts in preliminary damage assessments, in collaboration with the Middlesex County Office of Emergency Management, were highlighted as part of ongoing initiatives to bolster emergency response capabilities.
In other council matters, a proclamation honored the 80th anniversary of the Tri Burrow Memorial VFW Auxiliary 5479, recognizing their long-standing service to veterans through volunteerism and fundraising. The council also observed a moment of silence for Chris Mueller, a dedicated member of the Dunellen Office of Emergency Management, acknowledging his contributions and legacy within the community.
Several resolutions were reviewed and approved, covering a range of topics from administrative changes to community programs. Notably, Resolution 104 awarded a contract for pedestrian safety improvements at high-traffic intersections, funded by a $170,000 grant. Another resolution sought to modernize the police department’s employment structure, continuing the chief of police’s tenure.
A recent fire incident on Front Street was reported, emphasizing the rapid response from local and neighboring fire departments. Fundraising efforts to support the fire department were announced, underscoring community solidarity in the aftermath of the incident.
The meeting also touched on routine administrative updates, including police department statistics and upcoming community events like the open-air market and library-hosted activities. The finance committee’s progress on drafting the budget proposal was mentioned, with a focus on addressing rising costs and potential tax increases.
