Dunstable Board of Selectmen Backs Land Acquisition for Wildlife Management Area
- Meeting Overview:
The Dunstable Board of Selectmen convened on February 4th, 2026, to discuss a range of topics, including support for land acquisition by the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, digital equity initiatives, and a controversial legal case involving a resident’s dog. The most notable outcome was the Board’s unanimous decision to endorse the state’s acquisition of two parcels of land on L Street and Groton Street, aimed at enhancing the adjacent wildlife management area.
The proposal to support the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s acquisition of land was a central focus of the meeting. The Board discussed two particular parcels: a 30-acre strip near a solar field and an 8 or 9-acre parcel near the town line. The former was considered undevelopable after multiple perk tests, and the latter was seen as a strategic addition to the wildlife management area. A motion to send a letter of support for the acquisitions was approved unanimously, with expectations for the L Street property closing by the end of February and an expedited timeline for the Groton Street parcel.
Another discussion centered on the town’s digital equity initiatives, spearheaded by a regional organization, NEMCOG. The Board reviewed efforts to improve internet access and educational tools, particularly for seniors and students. A grant of $41,600 was secured to fund these initiatives, which include a laptop-sharing program at the library and the introduction of smartboards in high school classrooms. An intergenerational program was also proposed, where high school students would assist seniors in learning to use technology, fostering community connections and improving digital literacy.
The Board also addressed an ongoing legal matter concerning a resident’s dog, which had stirred community concern. The Board discussed the legal fees incurred and acknowledged the emotional toll on residents involved in the proceedings. A member noted the testimony of a resident with a Chihuahua. Despite the costs, the Board expressed gratitude for the legal action, with a judge recognizing the Board’s reasonable handling of the case and suggesting that stricter conditions might have been imposed otherwise.
In addition, the meeting covered potential future uses for a town-owned parcel on Hall Street, currently designated for the recreation department. A member suggested considering the land for affordable housing, noting the town’s financial constraints and the need to explore alternative revenue sources. The Board acknowledged the presence of power lines on the property, which might limit its development, but agreed to explore potential uses, including leasing the land or issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to identify developers or non-profit organizations interested in creating affordable housing.
