- Meeting Overview:
The East Bethel City Council meeting held on November 25th, 2024, addressed several issues impacting the community, including fire safety measures, financial considerations for the local ice arena, and public safety updates from the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. The council also discussed upcoming community events and performance evaluations for city administration.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on fire safety and the challenges faced by the East Bethel Fire Department. The department, which responded to 98 calls for service in October, is on track to reach approximately 1,200 calls by the end of the year. Fire Chief S. highlighted incidents that occurred at the same address, where a fire rekindled multiple times, necessitating several responses.
As colder weather approaches, the chief emphasized fire safety during Thanksgiving, advising residents to exercise caution when deep-frying turkeys and to ensure Christmas trees are well-watered to prevent fire hazards.
In addition to fire safety updates, the council discussed the financial outlook for the East Bethel ice arena. While the arena’s budget is currently strained due to preparations for the hockey season, there was optimism due to increased ice sales and advertising revenue. These positive financial indicators suggest a favorable outlook for the arena’s operations. However, concerns were raised about the accessibility of the ice arena for East Bethel residents, given past perceptions of prioritization of external rental clients. The council highlighted the need to ensure that local residents feel included and have access to the facilities.
Another financial matter involved expenditures for small tools and minor equipment at the arena, totaling $917. Council members inquired about the purchasing process and its impact on the arena’s budget. Additionally, a $1,180 payment to AR Excavating for a fire incident involving a topper truck was discussed, clarifying that the service was contracted as the city lacks an excavator. The council also reviewed a $1,137 expenditure for replacing carpets in city hall offices, which received positive feedback for enhancing the office’s appearance.
Public safety was another focal point of the meeting, with Derek Peters from the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office presenting a report on October’s activities. The month recorded 516 calls for service, including one burglary, five thefts, and five instances of property damage, along with 29 custodial arrests. Notable traffic incidents were highlighted, such as the arrest of a driver with multiple warrants and another for driving without a valid license. Peters also issued a public service announcement about ice safety, cautioning residents to ensure ice stability before venturing out.
The meeting also covered upcoming community events aimed at fostering community spirit and supporting local needs. A tree lighting event is scheduled for December 6th, where food donations will be collected for the NACE food shelf. The fire department will participate in an event with Santa on December 14th, focusing on the west side of the city, collecting food donations like peanut butter and canned goods.
In administrative matters, the council discussed a performance evaluation for the city administrator, conducted during a closed session. The session’s summary will be included in the agenda for the next public meeting, allowing for any necessary amendments.
