East Bethel Park Commission Favors Game Time Playground Design Amidst Plans for New Recreational Facilities
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the East Bethel Park Commission prioritized discussions on the selection of new playground equipment for Viking Meadows Park, favoring a design by Game Time due to its appeal to children of varying ages and its familiar features. The meeting also delved into potential additions of pickleball courts and the need for more athletic fields to accommodate increasing community demand.
The commission’s consensus on the Game Time playground design was largely influenced by its engaging features suitable for children of all ages, with members expressing satisfaction with its alignment to existing equipment in other parks. As one member noted, the design was favored because “it’s something similar to what we already have and something you guys are familiar with.” Another member highlighted the design’s appeal, noting that it appeared to offer “a lot more for the kids to do of all the varying ages.” However, the discussion also pointed out the limitations once playground equipment is installed, with concerns that modifications post-installation are challenging due to the permanence of cemented components.
Alongside playground discussions, the commission explored the inclusion of pickleball courts in the park plans. While the current park budget of $163,000 was considered, the noise levels associated with pickleball were a cause for concern among members, especially for future nearby residents. It was noted that installing the courts before residential development could help manage expectations regarding noise. The commission acknowledged the potential impact on early risers and emphasized the importance of integrating these aspects into the planning process.
Funding updates were provided by Tom Bertis, a land project manager for Capsule Homes, who announced imminent financing for the park’s second phase, including a payment of $91,000. He suggested an eagerness to expedite completion by advancing funds for a shelter. Bertis also highlighted the 50 acres of open space slated for enhancing recreational opportunities.
In addressing the growing demand for athletic fields, the commission reviewed field use requests for the upcoming year. Discussions highlighted the potential development of Bondi Park into a new sports complex, noting its suitability due to minimal residential proximity and wetland issues. Parking was identified as a logistical challenge, as current facilities are limited in capacity.
During the meeting, commissioners approved the renewal of terms for Tim Hoffman and Denise Lachinski, both expressing a willingness to continue serving. In contrast, long-time commissioner Sue Jefferson announced her departure due to relocation. Jefferson’s service, dating back to 1990, was acknowledged with plans to honor her contributions formally. The commission also discussed the necessity of posting the vacancy for her position to attract new applicants.
The meeting further addressed several community activities, including cross-country ski trail grooming and the status of the outdoor skating rink, with weather conditions having delayed its full operation. The indoor New Year’s Eve skate event was noted as a success, though it was clarified that skate rentals were not available, and ice time scheduling was dependent on paid reservations.
Additionally, the commission received feedback on audio issues during meetings and YouTube broadcasts, with efforts underway to seek quotes for replacement equipment. Budget constraints were acknowledged, though progress was noted in other infrastructure improvements like heating.
