- Meeting Overview:
During a recent East Brunswick Town Council meeting, community and development issues were addressed, including the 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), recognition of service by a police lieutenant, and discussions on affordable housing legislation. The meeting also heard from residents on local concerns, recognized the achievements of the Township Recreation and Parks Department, and discussed upcoming community events.
The Council addressed the 2024 CDBG, presented by East Brunswick housing specialist Susan Fine. The grant, expected to be around $125,000, aims to support activities benefiting low and moderate income individuals, the elderly, and those with disabilities. The council supported the proposed projects and set a deadline of March 5th, 2024, for project submissions. Though the public was invited to comment, the discussion concluded without public input.
In addition to the CDBG, the council approved Ordinance 2403, allocating $75,000 for various general improvements in East Brunswick. The public hearing saw no residents come forward to speak, and the ordinance was passed unanimously.
The council also formally acknowledged the retirement of Lieutenant Shawn Tain from the East Brunswick Police Department. Tain’s 25 years of service were celebrated, marking his retirement effective March 1st, 2024.
Mayor Cohen’s report touched on the township’s 2024 budget and anticipated state aid from energy tax credits. He also highlighted a letter from West Windsor’s clerk regarding affordable housing obligations and urged support for a resolution echoing West Windsor’s concerns. The Mayor outlined the history and potential impact of affordable housing obligations on future development.
The Recreation and Parks Department’s accomplishments were shared, noting several awards and recognitions, including Professional of the Year and Social Media Campaign of the Year. The Youth Council director was also celebrated as one of the top 30 professionals under 30. The department is active in community engagement, with plans for a golf outing, bringing the Vietnam Wall to the community art center, and starting a pickleball club. A user-friendly app for activities is in development. The Office of Aging reported an increase in membership and plans to install automatic doors at the senior center.
The public comments segment allowed residents to voice their concerns. Judy Goldridge brought attention to the issue of unregulated circulars and flyers littering properties. Another resident inquired about the openings of local businesses and tax relief programs for seniors.
The council was informed about the progress of cricket fields, a new pickleball club, and events organized by the Arts Commission. The Shade Tree Division received commendation for their efforts in snow removal.
As the meeting concluded, announcements for upcoming community events were made, including a job fair, Little League opening day, and a free rabies clinic. The council went through the consent agenda and adjourned without separate discussion on resolutions.
