- Meeting Overview:
The East Brunswick Town Council addressed issues concerning public safety, community development, and infrastructure in its recent meeting. The council also acknowledged the services of two municipal employees, reviewed a bond ordinance for capital improvements, and invited the public to the upcoming Festival of Color.
The meeting gained notable momentum when the concern for public safety, particularly in houses of worship, was brought forth. Despite the Township Police Department’s offer of free training and risk assessment to over 25 houses of worship, only four have availed of the service. The lack of participation was met with concern, and council members urged those with contacts in these institutions to encourage them to take advantage of the Public Safety officers’ services.
In response to the public safety theme, the mayor reported on the active shooter training conducted by the police department for municipal employees and other township organizations.
The council also took a moment to recognize the importance of water safety by proclaiming May as National Water Safety Month. They discussed the township’s commitments to providing swimming lessons and enhancing safety measures around water bodies. Additionally, the council approved a resolution to honor two employees for their induction into the Municipal Safety Institute Leadership Academy, acknowledging their dedication to learning and applying safety practices.
The public comment period shed light on local concerns, including clarification on an ordinance amendment related to unauthorized parking in township properties, specifically at Crystal Springs. The ordinance aims to address parking issues and maintain order in township-owned spaces.
Citizens also expressed concerns regarding rumors about the mall, issues with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and high water bills due to estimated readings.
Another topic of discussion was the infrastructure related to the Community Art Center. The council debated the sewer system design for the center and its potential future connection to Heavenly Farms. Concerns were raised about the cost implications and the need for thorough investigation before proceeding with the resolution.
There was also discourse on ordinances that would impact the township’s development and safety. An ordinance was introduced to modify fees for commercial properties regarding certificates of occupancy and another to amend the speed limit on New Brunswick Avenue.
The council reviewed a bond ordinance providing for various capital improvements, which includes projects and equipment that the mayor and finance department have been working on, highlighting the council’s focus on enhancing the township’s infrastructure and facilities.
Lastly, a council member announced the Festival of Color to be held at the Community Arts Center, an upcoming event indicative of the township’s vibrant community life and cultural engagement.
